AVIC can't compete with Boeing or Airbus jetliners outside China, because it doesn't have any aircraft that could pass FAA/EU certification yet. AVIC optimists points to C-919 the answer, but the proof is in the pudding, and we'll see if AVIC even attempts to gain FAA certification.

FAA can delay or deny the C-919 certification. The way China is going that you will see 中国航空管理局 to replace FAA.

I don't think the FAA will deny certification on other than technical grounds. The C-919 is still a far cry from being a threat to Boeing on the international market.

Are You Ready To Share The Cake?

ARJ21 is going to take a large slice, very soon
Lear Jet, Tupolev, Bombardier, Embraer, Sukhoi, Mitsubishi, Airbus, Boeing, Antonov, Irkut, Saab... These are the ARJ21's competition and it's steep. ARJ would be lucky to get a fork full of cake.

if ARJ can take 40% of china's domestic market then it's already a very successful venture and a good beginning for china's civilian aircraft industry. china is not ready to compete in the international markets yet but since it's so huge economically, geographically and demographically they can build and nurture an aircraft industry. this is something a lot of other nations that have aircraft industry inspirations don't have. if china does not develop ARJ21 or the comac 919 then the entire domestic airline industry will have to use foreign planes.

I agree absolutely. Once the C-919 has proven its safety and reliability in the domestic market and in a few Third World nations, the others will take notice.

The whole thing centers around that China is the largest market for new passenger airlines for probably the next 25 years. It doesn't matter what competition is out there. The whole point is China buying its own aircraft is the threat to Airbus and Boeing. The whole idea of filing a WTO complaint charging China's domestic airline industry is subsidized is to force China to "eliminate subsidies" with the goal of raising the price for a Chinese airliner so it is at least on par with Boeing and Airbus. At that point why would anyone buy the Chinese airliner that doesn't a have a record to build on for safety when they can get the Boeing or Airbus that has a proven record and at least the same price? It doesn't matter how much competition is out there. They can badmouth whatever domestic airliner China produces all they want. The fact is the government can order Chinese airliners to buy domestic and Boeing and Airbus will still get hurt.

Some people think that's absurd yet doesn't Hollywood complain about unfair trade practices regarding China when you see no Chinese domestic movies making money in the US box office? Yet they see that as China's unfair trade practices.

Boeing and Airbus are also subsidized by their their respective govts. In the case if the US, it is in the form of defense contracts. Airbus and Boeing were locked in trade disputes many years ago and I remember an international tribunal ruled there were subsidies.

I believe using the term "subsidies" is just WTO language to make it a case within its authority. It's to skirt around China's low-wage advantage which is what will beat Boeing and Airbus in price. They can't pretty much demand a country to raise wages to Western developed levels because if that were as easy as it sounds, all countries would do it. The idea is to force China to raise the price of their domestic airliners to make it too expensive even for China itself.

I don't think neither Boeing or Airbus would be worried since ARJ21 is a narrow body jet in which neither companies are in direct competition and comac 919 is still only on paper and would still take significant time to gain a type certificate from Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the (European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Without it the plane won't be able to leave the Chinese borders since no airport will allow a plane to land without it.
Comac 919 would also need to compete in fuel economy rating and after service in which both companies has a quantum leap distance over any starter uppers.

The fact that China has a significant program going and growing in the future is more than I can say about any other Asian nation even try attempting such an expensive persuite is a positive. Doubters and skeptics can point to any obstacles they want to but deep down they know it's all about the program that counts. Boeing and Airbus can not grow without access to the Chinese market that's why they are nervous about ARJ21 and C919 because of the strength of the program and it's potential growth.
