Actually, I don't really feel the urgency for China to start putting half-baked fully self-developed engines into their platforms just yet. Although it would be highly desirable, but in any new projects or any projects in general, there is a timeframe to get these platform up and flying and also a budget in which these projects should have.

So, if it is much more expensive or long to get the Chinese engines into the aircraft as compared to using foreign engines which China can secured in numbers, then it would be easier and faster to get these engines into the aircraft, get them flying and testing to get the necessary datas, while at the same time work on their own local engines.

Although I reckon that it will not be easy to change the engines (that may be the case with the J-10s which most are still using Russian engines) but in order for the project to be running smoothly, it will be easier and faster to use an engine that is proven and available first.

Yes, but one hopes Chinese engine developers will finally get their act together by first reaching Russian levels, and then meet or maybe even exceed US-EU standards.

Well... that is kind of an unfair statement, don't you think? China only being development of high performance engines recently as compared to US and Russia. These things take times, don't you think? And so being new to this area and without too much or any help externally (US and Europe having arms embargoment, so don't think China can get help there, Russia would be China's main competitors in terms of arms sales, so it is kind of common sense that Russia will not provide too much or any meaningful help at all to help the Chinese in terms of the heart of the aircraft.) so the Chinese needed longer time to get these engines online.

AVIC can't compete with Boeing or Airbus jetliners outside China, because it doesn't have any aircraft that could pass FAA/EU certification yet. AVIC optimists points to C-919 the answer, but the proof is in the pudding, and we'll see if AVIC even attempts to gain FAA certification.

... and we'll see if AVIC even attempts to gain FAA certification.

Which means if AVIC does not get FAA certification, the C-919 will have almost zero export orders, leaving them only the home market. So it makes a mockery of their original objective.

Well if Obama has his way, there won't be a domestic market for Chinese domestic airliners. China making and buying its own planes will hit Boeing and Airbus in a major way.

not really mace not unless The PRC gets airliners of a Class much larger anyway. The Reigional liner class market is very competitive Boing and Airbuse are in it but they mostly dominate the international class market.
C919 advances with mid-fuselage completion
By: MAVIS TOHSINGAPORE Source: 03:13 28 Aug 2014
The mid fuselage of the first Comac C919 aircraft has rolled off AVIC Xian Aircraft Industry's production line, as the airframer works towards starting final assembly of the narrowbody by end 2014.

“The successful roll out of the mid fuselage is an important achievement of the whole fuselage work package, and at this point, the C919 aircraft has taken a solid step towards structure roll off,” says Comac.

A spokesman tells Flightglobal a delivery ceremony will be held on 29 August at AVIC's facility in Xian. The part will then be delivered to Comac's Shanghai facility in September.

He adds that the airframer has also taken delivery of the C919's first forward fuselage on 24 August. This part, manufactured by Jiangxi Hongdu Aviation Industry, is the first major C919 structure to be delivered to Comac.

Late last month, the nose section of the first C919 aircraft also rolled out of AVIC CAC Commercial Aircraft’s facility. The 6.7m long section is expected to be delivered to Comac in September.

The Chinese airframer is working towards an end 2015 first flight target for the C919.
