China's transport, tanker & heavy lift aircraft

Re: China's transport plane capacities

I'm surprised that it is called STOL when it looks like any twin-engine turboprop. It's nowhere near Boeing's YC-14.

STOL just stands for 'short take-off and landing', any aircraft can be considered capable of STOL, many such planes are turboprop

Y-20 transport first flight will be in 2012. New update on Huitong's site (a "stealthy" update).

Currently 603 Institute, XAC and SAC are developing an advanced 4-engine large transport (Y-20?) which is smaller than American C-17 and based upon some IL-76MD technology. Its max payload was expected to be around 50t and max TO weight >200t. Fitted with high-lift devices along the wing leading and trailing edges, the aircraft is capable of taking off from relatively short and unpaved runways, making many temporary airfields behind the battlefield accessible. Currently it is unclear whether the aircraft will have an IFR probe installed or not. The prototypes and the initial batch may be powered by Russian D-30KP-2/WS-18 turbofans, later by the modified WS-10 (WS-118?). A full-scale metal mock-up (head section) of Y-20 was constructed by 2008 and the first flight is projected in 2012. On August 20, 2009 SAC started to build the rear fuselage of the first prototype. It was reported (April 2010) that the full-scale mock-up was completed in early 2010. It was also rumored that the aircraft might serve as the testbed for the Chinese airborne laser weapon prototype similar to American YAL-1 which is thought to be under development. The next generation of medium transport aircraft was believed to be under development at XAC/603 Institute as well, powered by two modified WS-10 turbofans. Its max payload is around 25t.

Wow I didn't know WS-10 was this versatile powering both fight jets and transport planes.

The WS-10 core is based off the CFM-56, the core of which is used in both High-bypass and low-bypass applications, so it makes for a very good starting point for powering different aircraft types.

If the Y-20 has a MTOW of 200-210 tons, shouldn't the maximum payload be about 60 tons at least?

Yeah someone asked that on Huitong's message board. His answer was "The max payload will depend on the engine Y-20 uses. If it's D-30, its performance will be similar to that of IL-76 (~50t). If it's WS-10, then the Y-20 may be able to carry up to 60t."

Here's a new picture which he added recently, I think:

Looks a more like the C-17 and A400M than Il-76.

Y-20 Heavy Transport Aircraft

I was just reading one of the Air Force magazines at the newsstand today and noticed a CAD image of the future Chinese transport aircraft code name "Y-20", Reportedly, it is suppose to be powered by the new WS-18 engines.

I searched the forum and I am surprised there is no one made a topic of it yet. So here is a thread dedicated to it.

Can't find the CAD image online, but I did find some photograph of the scale model and CG render.

So far, all we know is its suppose to be in 200 ton class, and with payload of ~50 tons. Its 27 tons shy of C-17's 77 tons payload, which is a pity IMO.

Re: Y-20 Heavy Transport Aircraft

If about 50 tons, then it's not enough to ship a MBT, but overall in the range of Il-76.

No, it can. Type 96 is 42.8 tonnes. So it is well within its carrying capacity. Althought it definitely can't transport the newer Type 99 which is around 54~58 tonnes (all variants A1~G) unless there is an upgrade to the current specification.

Are the dimensions of the cargo hold sufficient? One thing is theoretically being able to carry the weight of a modern MBT, another is the practicality.
