Re: Y-20 Heavy Transport Aircraft

Y-20 will has a payload of 60 tons.

And the primary reason preventing IL-76/476 from being a capable cargo is not their payload but their dimensions, they are simply too narrow to accomdate large equipments including many heavy tanks, etc.

As for the looks of Y-20, the model shown in the OP's post looks like one of the rejected proposal of Y-20, instead of the real thing.

If WS-10G is truth to have a max thrust of 15000kg. I am quite confident Y-20 is capable of 60tons lifting.

Re: Y-20 Heavy Transport Aircraft

I thought WS-10G is a fighter engine, i.e. a turbofan with a low By-Pass Ratio. This beast want engines with a BPR of about 6, in order to achieve a reasonable range.

Huitong says it'll fly by 2012... I imagine we should get pics of it by then -- though there might be less interest and therefore less spotters for this aircraft.

Re: Y-20 Heavy Transport Aircraft

Plus the Leap-X and CFM-56 use the same core and are both high-bypass engines too, so thrust shouldn't be an issue for production.
