At one stage, the Y-20 was at 70 degree roll angle. Is that a safe thing to do?

It all depends, recall that many years ago, we lost a B-52, and recently a C-17, from these very spirited flying displays, so it requires a great deal of finesse as well as restraint, also these larger aircraft will also exhibit a tendency toward "overbanking" where you actually have to feed in heavy opposite aileron, in order to keep the aircraft from increasing its own bank angle.. So no, its not safe, but it does demonstrate good low speed handling, and in the hands of someone with lots of "feel", it is almost perfectly safe, but once it begins to "slide", it takes lots of opposite aileron and rudder to recover, and you have to "depitch" the aircraft in one fluid move, while moving the throttle to max thrust. No its not completely safe, but if done by someone who "knows" the airplane, these maneuvers look "awesome".
