China's strategy in Korean peninsula

It's interesting how people are trying to spin a reason for China's moves against NK after meeting with Trump. Of course it always involves how Trump intimidated China and nothing else. No, what's different with Trump than previous Presidents and their foreign policies is they offered nothing to China. China is obligated for the goodness of all humanity. The US does not like to give up anything so they usually cloak their interests as the world's interests thus they don't have to give up anything and if other countries don't fall in line, they use intimidation by painting uncooperative countries as part of the problem even directly conspiring. That's been the traditional playbook. Now Trump wants to deal with China on North Korea. And opening never offered by previous Presidents. Negotiation is seen as weakness. Cooperation is seen as weakness. Because of partisan domestic politics, Republican and Democrats can never be seen as weak hence why the nothing but unconditional surrender foreign policy. From China's perspective it probably looks refreshing that Trump is offering to deal hence Beijing itself may loosen up. Of course it's too early to tell. Trump has shown to change positions in an instance. China could be giving tokens because of their distrust of the US and only doing just enough.

All of the users here forget that in case of war there's not a single reason why Kim would send missiles over Japan and not Beijing/Dalian. All of you write like NK is PRC's vassal state - it isn't for sure now. PRC doesn't give them money for nothing and they aren't sponsoring them - they know how to get money and they're doing it for decades.

And don't forget that for all Koreans the second biggest enemy after traditional Japan is China. Not US.

Oooo, China is scared!

Yeah for something that the US doesn't have to worry about, the US seems in alarm that even Trump who ran on not getting involved in other nations' problems is getting involved.

US installed the dictator Syngman Rhee in 1945 in South Korea and after his murder maintained a series of military dictatorships until the late '80's. The US president was Commander in Chief of the South Korean army for a long time, and so the commander of the military dictators(?), but I don't know how long.

That's a good point Janiz, the North Koreans hate China as much as Japan, maybe more. They simply need the Chinese more than they hate them at the moment, but when that changes, we'll probably see lots of vitriol publicly directed at China too.

Like they say nation state has no friend but only their own interest. Right now China is the only game in town .It is their lifeline .Noko might not like China but there is no choice. I agree with wolfie at the end of the day geopolitic triumph over everything else. Korea is the dagger that point to China's heartland Beijing and Shandong area. Nobody want war at your doorstep

Reprehensible as he is the alternative is even worse You think Syria is bad wait until North Korea implode
But if thing get worse I guess China just have to invade Korea to prevent from getting annex by soko As it has been done many times in history

To expect China sitting the fence when Noko get pummeled, is unrealistic
