The Philippines has started “superficial repairs” to the rundown BRP Sierra Madre grounded in Ayungin Shoal.

According to Chino Gaston and Marisol Abdurahman's report on “24 Oras,” the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said materials for the repairs were being delivered to the dilapidated naval ship.
“It was sad to see the state of the living conditions. We're trying to improve that by making sure they have at least decent sleeping facilities, decent dining facilities, internet,” AFP chief of staff General Romeo Brawner said.
“We can just do superficial repairs on it,” he added.
China has taken exception to the Philippine resupply mission held earlier this month, saying the Filipino ships illegally entered the area without their permission and illegally delivered construction materials.
However, the AFP slammed Beijing’s remarks and said what the Philippines did to BRP Sierra Madre was

For the Chinese, among the ASEAN, Indonesia is of the utmost importance follow by Thailand. The Philippine had lost its strategic value when the Chinese build those artificial island in the SCS. And about Indonesia don't worry about those NGO'S, the positive feedback regarding the Jakarta Bandung HSR, The Chinese ascendance and their support for Palestine are received favorably, especially when the Indonesian Elites and the Military knows that there is a plan to Balkanized Irian Jaya and Sumatra.Sorry I know this is a SCS thread in particular but I think general thoughts on ASEAN affairs are relevant also. I am very optimistic regarding China-ASEAN relations in the future. To illustrate this let's look at recent elections in two important ASEAN countries - Malaysia and Thailand.
After Anwar Ibrahim was elected PM of Malaysia last year, Brian Berletic on his New Atlas youtube channel made a video going into Ibrahim's background, talking about how he is a western stooge because he's previously worked for the WorldBank/IMF, involved in American NGOs, had his political party funded by NEDs etc. ie. your typical western-aligned western-educated puppet. So I was very pessimistic. But since becoming PM, he has met Xi in person, signed multiple co-operation deals with China, openly spoke of de-dollarisation and Chinese investments in Malaysia have been growing. He's even criticised Israel in this recent crisis.
With Thailand's elections this year, again a western-backed puppet Pita Limjaroenrat of the Move Forward Party seemingly won the elections. But he wasn't able to form government, and in the end the second biggest party Pheu Thai (which Brian Berletic has also revealed as another western aligned party) ended up having to make a deal with the military-affiliated parties to form government and now the "compromise" PM Srettha Thavisin has just visited Beijing for the Belt and Road forum, met Xi and has even invited Xi and Putin to visit Thailand in the future. The Thai-Laos-China high speed railway is getting built, and Chinese NEV companies are tripping over themselves to build factories in Thailand
To me these two examples just show that no matter how much the US NGOs or NED et al organisations try to foster and prop up some kind of anti-China political party or movement in ASEAN countries, even if they initially have some success eg in the Thai election, the economic/political pull of China is just way too strong in the region. Even notionally western-aligned leaders inevitably end up having to co-operate with China as the potential for self-destruction is just too great if they 100% jump into the pro-western camp, like Ukraine did. And the collective west just simply does not have the hard nor soft power to sway any ASEAN nation away from China,

You see normally I share your opinion. This time US is committed to Israel, even at cost of Ukraine. I know US will not come helping. That is why China should provoke Philipine on purpose to discredit US. When it ignores Philipine it will send another shock to its allies in Asia Pacifics. Their overlord cannot gaurantee its safety, and they must seek back up plan.An aggressive overreaction would be foolish. Small repairs will not reverse the structural decay of the ship. They'd need heavy equipment for that. What purpose does it serve besides political signalling? There are no fortifications being built. The ship has been there for 20+ years already. There is no need to rush.
