Writing blank checks or giving few million dollars to buy a tail of F-16 fighters?
A few photos my brother in law took a few hour ago:
He says the coastguard cutters go out fresh and clean to join the melee, and return all battered up like shown in the picture - the Vietnamese are resilient people.
He also says Vietnam are sending boats to cut the undersea fibre cables (happened 3 times this month now), so he has to go do all the repairs, and each repair costs upwards of RMB500,000+ ($80,000+), ouch!
Maybe someone with more knowledge can inform us how Vietnam are cutting the cables - by sending divers?
I've also seen pictures of Vietnam inducting new patrol vessels with an extended/hardened bow (on pk defence I think), designed specifically for ramming - the Chinese coastguard fleet may start to struggle if those are inducted in large numbers. I think china should have something similar if Beijing insists on engaging in 'small stick diplomacy' of utilising only civilian/law enforcement vessels.

This is SABOTAGE, act of WAR!
1)CHina should divert water away from GuangXi to Vietnam's northern red river.
2)Turning Chinese fishermen into militia.
3)modified patrol ships for ramming
4)economic sanction on Vietnam
Why the bother, might as well just sent a few missile over and blast the hell out of the Vietnamese.
I mean... come on! The Vietnamese claimed that areas as theirs, same as the Chinese. There is no wrong in the Vietnamese doing whatever they can to protect the sovereign of their water and land. If China goes into doing all those that you have mentioned, then China will be nothing but a big bully.
Things should be settle through talks and not immediately go into war. Do you actually know how much damage it would cause if China was to divert water away from Guangxi and into Vietnam northern red river... how many would have die?
Do you have any idea if the Chinese turned their fishermen into militia and these supposed militia are actually not trained well... and lacking in discipline are actually armed. What if they turned to innocent other nations' fishermen in that area?
And what is a modified patrol ships for ramming. That is not a sane idea. You might as well sent a frigates painted in coast guard color and shoot the hell out of anyone who defies.
The last option is the most viable... but note this... how much financially was China to Vietnam at this moment? Your economic sanction would have what effect as of now?
China has controlled paracel for 40 yrs and drilling area is right near triton island. Vietnam came all the way to cause trouble.
Cutting under water fiber optic is act of sabotage that has nothing to do with oil drilling.
Diverting some water won't make them all died. Just consider that as a dry season.
I think they should go further to team up with Cambodia and divert the Southern Mekong river going into Vietnam or build a Dam there.
economically sanction vietnam can come into many forms;
1)Withdraw all chinese investments from Vietnam
2)Freeze of vietnamese assets in China.
Finally, keep on persistent pressure. Vietnam is small country, yes they can put a fight but that would make them a nervous wreck psychologically and can't progress economically. No chance of being developed nation if CHina can keep up its pressure. They can fight all they want.
Are you using this logic and therefore agreeing that the Daoyutai is Japanese because Japan controlled them since 1895?
I am using the logic this is the same North Viet government made a deal with China in 1974 ; CHina supplied arms to North Viets and in exchange for taking Paracel from South Viets
Now, this same group of North Viet government ate their words. So much for their honor.
Not to mention the french took paracel from China during Qing time and passed on to Vietnam when they left.

What do you mean they will not all die? You mean you are willing to sacrifices civilians? Be responsible when you mention things like that (although I know you are angry, but that do not give you the rights to take life - no matters whose lightly.)
As to cutting of optic fibre... do you or the Chinese had solid proof it was the Vietnamese who did that? Please note that not too distance history, the Chinese was also accused of cutting underwater cables belonging to Vietnam. So... does Vietnam start shooting into China? No? Why? Vietnam is weaker? If that is the reason, and China is stronger and China do as you proposed, doesn't that make the Chinese nothing but bullies?
1) That would hurt China too. Chinese businessmen and companies in Vietnam invested quite a large sum of money, pulling those out would hurt normal Chinese citizen.
2) Freeze of Vietnamese assets in China - what have normal Vietnamese people who invested in China did wrong to China? In what law would the Chinese do that? And if the Chinese actually did that... then what guarantee would other foreigners who invested into China feel? They might just pull out... and worst... those that pull out still needed a place of production... so where can they go... Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand (less of Thailand now until she stabilized). So in a sense, yeah, I hope China did that... then investment will come rolling into ASEAN.
Like I say before, you cannot look at things in a single angle. Many things are actually interlinked. Of course you can hammer Vietnam easily, whats with the current China's military might, you can do funny things to Vietnam's economy, you can even do as you claim, build a dam, let the Vietnamese die of thirst.
But internationally, who is going to pay? China... thats who.
I am so glad that the leader of China is not actually doing what you have said. They have display utmost maturity and responsibility and it is comforting.
