It's great to see continuing high level exchanges between China and the largest ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam most recently). Now just waiting for Thailand's new PM to visit China and cement her government's position into the pro-China camp with new business deals. I believe the Chinese ambassador to Thailand met with her recently be and extended an official invitation so it should happen in the near future.

The Philippines situation is such a pity given they are the 2nd largest ASEAN country population wise and there was hope and potential with Marcos (at least early on in his presidency) that they would also be in the pro-China camp which basically meant all of ASEAN would be united in being China friendly. I hope this can still be possible eventually.

I've wondered for a while, what exactly is the PH's endgame here?

Restarting EDCA and buying mid-range missiles, sure, to some degree they strengthen your defense. But these things won't help the PH proactively advance their interest in the SCS.

Best case imo, is that they are used as negotiating leverage in the future when the PH is willing to come around. But personally, I don't see this happening before the 2028 election.
