Question is, why is Vietnam suddenly doing drills with Philippines?

What does the new leader To Lam stand to benefit by antagonizing China?

Vietnam would probably point to China's support of Cambodia in constructing the Funan Techo canal as the current source of irritation between both countries.

China almost got couped by western forces (including tiny hats people) in 1989. Vietnam is facing the same issues, it is very serious. FB, youtube aren't banned in Vietnam.

Isn't that all for show, so that the people in Washington will not doubt their newly comprehensive partnership with Vietnam. The USA today is pretty much grasping at straws to who's going to be on their side if a shooting war with China starts. This event would help ease its anxiety. Meanwhile, Vietnam is surging ahead reaping the benefits of this great power rivalry. The Philippines has so much to learn from Vietnam starting from being an actual independent sovereign country with its own foreign policy.

The true winner in the arbitration ruling is Vietnam, as Trump use to say let's build an island and let the Philippines pay for it.. Lol
