"Torpedoes are found in direction xx at distance xx."

Upon docking at a naval port from its drill mission, the missile destroyer Haikou of a destroyer flotilla under the South China Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) received the circular on "enemy" situation from the online simulation training system on July 17, 2012.

After seeing two torpedo loci quickly approaching the warship on the screen, Shao Shuguang, commander of the "Haikou" warship, commanded the warship to maneuver at high speed and ordered to cast underwater sound jammer for interference.

The torpedo loci on the screen were soon deviated from the ship's sailing direction.

The "blue side" of this online simulation training is the experts of an experimental area of the PLA Navy located more than one thousand kilometers away. According to Chen Yueqi, commander of the destroyer flotilla who is also on the scene, the online training has become a strong means for the destroyer flotilla to speed up its transformation of the combat-power generating mode.

At the interval of the confrontation, Wei Fangyuan, commander of the Ship-to-Air Missile Element of the Haikou warship, said: "This modern remote off-site network simulation training system can freely build various types of realistic battlefield environments, which not only allows the officers and men to feel the actual-combat atmosphere, but also tempers the commander's command quality."

The Air Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) organized 14 vehicle and vessel troop units to conduct a long-range maneuver drill and assessment, codenamed "Iron Flow 12", in multiple areas in late July of 2012. According to the briefing, this long-range maneuver drill will last for 22 days and span across 28 provinces (cities and prefectures).

It is learned that all the operations during the "Iron Flow 12" followed the requirements of "actual-combat organization and training, full-process evaluation and review-style summary".

The participating troops carried out full-strength, full-process and full-element drills on such subjects as combat readiness transition, organizing and commanding, long-range maneuver, transportation service, field camping and so on, with colleges and academies as well as training institutions organized to observe and study in the entire process and participate in the assessment and evaluation.

Rear Adm. Eli Sharvit, commander of the Israel Navy’s Haifa Base, and Rear Adm. Yang Junfei, deputy commander of the PLA’s North China Sea. (IDF)

Tel Aviv — Three Chinese warships from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) docked in Haifa Aug. 13 for a five-day visit here as guests of the Israel Navy.

Led by Rear Adm. Yang Junfei, deputy commander of the PLAN’s North China Sea Fleet, the Chinese contingent will tour multiple sites throughout the country in honor of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Jerusalem and Beijing.

Last month, Yang met with EU Naval Force (NAVFOR) Commander, Rear Adm. Jean-Baptiste Dupuis, aboard the French command and replenishment ship Marne, which was plying the waters of the Gulf of Aden. At the time of the July 17 visit, an EU NAVFOR spokesman noted the need for enhanced cooperation with the PLAN’s anti-piracy task force operating in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia.

“The significant number of actors who are committed in counter-piracy makes regular contact essential [for] de-confliction ... and coordinated actions where appropriate to increase the effectiveness of the various navies present in the area,” according to the EU NAVFOR spokesman.

Israel has hinted at, but has not publicly acknowledged, anti-smuggling and counterterror operations around the Horn of Africa and into the Arabian Sea. In an interview last spring, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff, told Israel’s Yediot Ahronot, “You almost won’t find a point in time that nothing is happening somewhere around the world.”

Gantz spent a week in China last May as guest of PLA Commander Gen. Chen Bindnge. It was the first visit by an IDF chief of staff since 1996 and was aimed to strengthen Sino-Israeli ties in light of Beijing’s growing interests in the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf regions.

Anybody else find this terribly ironic, since China has long been supplying Israel's avowed enemies like Iran, Iraq, Hezbollah with anti-ship missiles and other arms that have caused considerable damage to Israeli warships.

And the other side of the coin is how Israel supplies China's rival India with all sorts of arms...

All in all a remarkable relationship between the two countries.

All the more surprising in the light of the great cordiality in their mutual relationship, maybe this can be a template for US-China relations - military sales rivals, but not enemies.

they both smart enough to realize that india/iran/iraq/etc will receive wpn from russia and european if they did not receive missile from them, this is not ironic because they both know their position.

Nothing ironic about this. It is all business. And it is good business selling to these states.

Recent claims that China's aircraft carrier platform will be officially put into service and claims that China had successively test-fired its new-model long-distance strategic missiles have attracted military fans and netizens' close attention. But personally, the information that attracted my attention was the recruitment of China's air force in 2012.

The recruitment work of China's air force has come to an end and 87 students from the Tsinghua University, Peking University and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics joined the air force of China.

It reminds me of saying in China's air force, "We want third-generation planes and we more want third-generation soldiers."

When third-generation planes just joined the air force, many units equipped with them found a problem: Third-generation planes were put into service and joined in trainings and military drills, but the phenomenon of "using equipment of third-generation planes but using tactics of second-generation planes" appeared. Regarding this phenomenon, many air force units expressed "wanting third-generation planes, and more wanting third-generation crews."

This saying exactly reflects the relations between the military equipment and men in the military construction.

In fact, the battle effectiveness of a military unit consists of only two factors of the equipment and men. To certain extent, the factor of the men is not less important than the factor of the military equipment at all. Regarding the developing course of battle effectiveness, a sentence that is frequently mentioned is that the qualities of the men and the development of military equipment must go simultaneously. We could even say that the qualities of the men should go ahead of the R&D of the military equipment.

Before the Second World War, Germany, restricted by international treaties, could not equip its army with tanks and armored cars of various kinds in large scales. At that time, German general Heinz Guderian used trucks as tanks to study the so-called "armored lightning war" in the military training and implemented this training method in daily trainings of German armed forces.

Cases of the same kind were many in the development course of the People's Liberation Army. A well-known example was that China shot down the U-2 high-altitude spy plane by using the SAM-2 missile. At that time, the Second Missile Battalion under China's air force successfully shot down the U-2 spy planes with advanced electronic countermeasure equipment by using a method called the "close and rapid tactic."

This "close and rapid tactic" was based on the training of the men. At that time, relevant Russian researchers said, "When the Chinese armed forces were using the SAM-2 missile, it had exceeded its designed technological range of the normal use."

These two examples practically reflected the relationship between the men and military equipment. They also indicated that the education and training of the men should go simultaneously with or even ahead of the R&D of the equipment.

The information of China's air force recruiting told us a fundamental principle that the overall improvement of the armed forces' quality is based on the condition that the armed forces can attract and recruit the most outstanding talents of the society.

In addition to this, the training and fostering system of armed forces should match the development of the military equipment. Only in this way can the situation that having both the third-generation planes and third-generation crews or having the third-generation planes and fourth-generation crews be realized.

Currently, people pay a lot of attention to the aircraft carrier. If we regard the aircraft carrier as the representative of advanced, high-tech and large-scale battle platforms, this principle could be explained by another sentence that the armed forces of China need the aircraft carrier and more need elite soldiers.

GUANGZHOU, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping has ordered the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to intensify its "real combat" awareness in order to sustain military readiness.

According to a press release issued by military authorities on Wednesday, Xi made the remarks during an inspection conducted from Dec. 8 to 10 at the PLA's Guangzhou military theater of operations, a term usually used to emphasize the coordination and joint operations by forces in air, land and sea.

By chairing the CPC Central Military Commission (CMC), Xi is also the commander-in-chief of China's armed forces, which, with 2.3 million enlisted personnel, is the largest in the world.

Xi asked PLA officers and non-commissioned officers to adopt real combat criteria in military training and intensify such awareness among soldiers.

Xi also reaffirmed the PLA's core task of improving its abilities to wage regional wars in the Information Age and conduct diversified military operations.

"Bear in mind that it is the soul of the military to obey the command of the Party without compromise, it is the top priority for the military to be able to combat and win battles, and it is fundamental that the military consolidate itself through governing the troops lawfully and austerely, so as to reinforce its development featuring loyalty to the Party, modernization and standardization," Xi told officers above the division level of the garrison troops in Guangzhou.

Wearing an army-green Mao suit during his inspection, Xi boarded a PLA Navy destroyer, the Haikou, and had dinner with sailors on the warship. He also examined an armored vehicle and observed a military drill.

Xi urged PLA officers and soldiers to maintain their loyalty to the CPC by studying and implementing the spirit of the CPC's 18th National Congress.

"The PLA should unconditionally implement the principles to govern the military lawfully and austerely, train the troops through strict discipline, always focus on grassroots units and further improve fighting capabilities," Xi said.

Xi urged the PLA to uphold the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, take Deng Xiaoping Theory, the "Three Represents" and the Scientific Outlook on Development as a guide, deeply implement the main theme and guideline on the development of national defense and the Army, and seriously implement the strategic arrangements on national defense made by the CPC's 18th National Congress.

He showed his firm belief that on the way to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the heroic PLA must carry forward the cause and forge ahead into the future and effectively implement the historic mission.

During his inspection, Xi was accompanied by the PLA's top brass including Gen. Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission and member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, and Wu Shengli, commander of the PLA Navy.

Wasn't there an "International Assessment and Strategy Center" thread somewhere?

Well here's something Richard Fisher wrote a few weeks ago. I love how he seems to have a hatred for Chinese internet military enthusiasts. They play no role in Chinese military developments so why bother unless you have a fragile ego.
