China Navy Power

No where in there did it say replacing ak-630 with kinzhal, it said replacing each AK-630 with a Kashtan.
Yeah, that was my mistake, sorry.

The entire idea has no appeal to me. Even if you have improved Antiship missile and SAM, it still doesn't conceal the fact that Sov is an outdated design using steam turbine and have absolutely no concept of RCS reduction. On top of that, you are getting Russian built ships (lack of workmanship and reliability comes to mind right away). And also, do you really want anymore 6500+ tonne destroyer with no long range air defense. Yes, I'm very sceptical about the 120 km claim for 9M96E2.

I agree with your assessment of the Sovremenny. But the relatively new technology behind the P-800 Oniks(Yakhont) is what the Chinese navy needs right now, esp with the Indians are fielding their PJ-10 BrahMos and to counter Atago class for the Japanese. I guess the relative "worthyness" of the boat depends on the new Chinese supersonic cruise missile program...

well, I'm not as enamoured with mach2 to mach3 anti-ship missiles as some people are. Always liked the lighter, more stealthy, lower flying and more accurate ones. Make no mistake here, despite what the Indians will tell you, the Russian version of Onyks is better than any export of Yakhont or Brahmos. That's why China imo has their own program of developing something like Onyks as I mentionned in my piece. Let's put it this way, is Yakhont (not Onyk) really better than what China already have with YJ-83/Club/YJ-62?

tphuang, I really enjoy reading your information. I have a couple of questions. First, in what capacity will the YJ-91 AshMs be used and two, whatever happened to that fancy LACM with side intakes?
YJ-91 will most likely be used by JH-7/A in the same way KH-31P is used by su-30mkk. As for LACM, I'm not sure which one you are talking about.

No unfortunately I don't. It's a really old pic. As you can see, it was watermarked by HuiTong's old website. Curiously, the picture is no longer on the new website. I wanted to know if you have any information about this missile.

Personally I believe that missile is an ARM, not an antiship missile. Kind of like China's next generation after the Kh-31P.

Well, there is no prove that missile really is the much talked about YJ-12, since we haven't had any other picture of YJ-12 and to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't joined service anywhere. Remember in 2004/5, they were talking about YJ-12 as the AShM on 052C instead of YJ-62. So, the only thing I can say is that I don't know enough about the missile to say anything useful.

China says aircraft carrier possible by 2010: paper

China could build its first aircraft carrier by 2010 if current research and development proceeds smoothly, a Hong Kong newspaper quoted a Chinese general as saying on Wednesday.

The Beijing-funded Wen Wei Po newspaper identified the source as a "zhong jiang," meaning lieutenant general or vice admiral, depending on the service, and a member of the military delegation at a parliament session in Beijing. It did not give further details.

Experts say China's military has been researching carriers for years as a way to protect its interests offshore, but there has been no formal admission of a program to build one. .. Last month, a Japanese legislator warned that Japan could become a Chinese province "if something goes wrong in Taiwan in the next 15 years."

Well, at least now, finaly, if the source is legit, they aren't denying their a/c carrier aspirations!

It's a wrong English text which distorts the original Chinese meaning:

据他所知目前航母研制进展顺利,如果速度快的话,有可能在2010年前完成。

Translation: "According to his knowledge(the general), the R&D of Chinese A/C goes smoothly. It may be completed before 2010 if the program executed fast."

Either way, IMHO, to complete it by 2010 means it whatever he is talking about almost certainly has to be the Varyag. No other major ship of this size that would be a carrier that could be completed by 2010 exists at this time to my knowledge.
