In that article, the foreign ministry of Japan also said that it is fine for Japan to tailgate China's fleet but not fine for China to do the same with its helicopters. WTF?

Well... look like the Japanese always have double standard to whatever they do. Just like the type of cars that was deliver to Asia is not the same (in quality) to the type for the US market.

All this Japan/China military tension is very strange as it remembers the Cold War.

It´s still more strange because those countries have strong commercial relations.

It´s like if a guy (japan) had sold me (China) a car or a computer, for example, and then, when i start to walk near his address, he starts to follow me showing his gun and asking me what are my intentions to be walking near his address.
So that, to sell me a car or a computer, i was good enough to him, but for me to bypass near his (the seller) address, i am an armed suspect with suspected aggressive intentions.
That don´t make sense at all.

Edited.

I know that China did siege a US survaillance ship and protested it´s presence in their EEZ waters, but the US ship was there deliberately with the purpose of survaillance, while the
Chinese fleet had to pass the japanese Islands because the Islands are in their way to the Pacifc Ocean, so that was not a deliberate action against Japan, just a bypass.

US-Japan military alliance, together with South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, people called they are the Asia-Pacific NATO, from the map, they form an island chain, surrounded by sea to China.
Although the Cold War has pasted, but the United States in order to maintain hegemony in the Asia Pacific region, continue to carry out strategic encirclement of China, because China is a rise of large country, not only that, but also into the strict arms embargo on China.
Japan's past aggression against China, but it has not learned the lessons of failure. Instead, using the US-Japan military alliance, to seek the interests of the East China Sea, For example, the Diaoyutai islands, the Japanese attempt to encroach upon, so that it can be invaded and occupied large areas of the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone.
While Japan and China have close commercial relations, but on the other hand, the winning marine resources, are equally important.Although both sides not going to military conflict, but both sides have made prevention.

I don't believe China will become a bully It simply not in their DNA. Centuries ago when China is the hegemon she has the chance to colonize south east asia but she didn't. The memory of admiral Zheng He is still deep in SEA. His temple in Penang, Semarang, Jakarta are still full of people until today!

:eek:ff I can't see how your remark, and made by many others in the past I might add can be left unchallenged. Without resorting to history, reason suggests the silliness of such a claim. How did a country the size of China become the size it is without expansion. Or are you suggesting it was spontaneous.?

POstscript.
It appears the knowledgeable Hendrik has completely for gotten the period of the waring states. Or the attempted invasion of Japan If the Han Chinese had been peace loving and non aggressive towards their neighbors as he would have us believe, then the area that makes up China would now consist of several countries.
As for not in the DNA to be agressive? The Chinese belong in the racial group defined as mongoloids, making up the people which includes Japan and Mongolia.

We'd have to make a "bully-o-meter". Relative to other past great powers, China's been fairly content with her own piece of land (i.e.: no colonialism of far off places, and only arguable hegemony to be border and territory disputes)

I think he's suggesting that China's not a naval hegemon, in the sense of colonizing continents and islands on the otherside of the world when it had the potential to do so(in comparison to other great naval powers of their time such as the British Empire).

But I agree taht we can't use history as a guide for what a country will or will not do in the present day - it is rather silly.

For some one who is completely ignorant about Chinese history and civilization. Here is the story, China grow to its present size due to the pull of her civilization around her periphery, encouraging the surrounding tribe to accept tacit Chinese cultural dominance over long period of time.

Manchu a northern nomad was half Chinese by the time they invade China. Instead of proclaiming independent Manchu nation they consider themselves to be the continuation of long line of Chinese Dynasty. They are the one who add Dongbei, Tibet and Xinjiang to the Chinese teritory.

The same with Mongol they too add Yunnan and inner Mongolia to the Chinese territory.

Country grew doesn't necessarily mean war. Now Tell me how Habsburg Austria grew to be large country when they originaly just a small principality. Because the Habsburg prince marry all the princess of Europe and they bring their domain as dowry!

a little interesting tidbit on Chinese live firing naval drills. According to the one about the recent South China Sea drill, they fired 71 missiles of 16 different types in the drill. They say it used the most real missile in the history of PLAN.

Looks like China is asserting the claim over the disputed islands in the South China Sea. There has been a clash (almost ended in firefights) between Chinese and Indonesian vessels in the area when the Indonesians seized a Chinese fishing boat. I think many South East Asian nations are taking advantage of the Cheonan Incident and the missile test is just a way of saying "don't mess with me".

Has anyone heard about the PLA rocket (unguided) test in the Yellow Sea recently?
