official:

At 8:44 on September 25, PLA Rocket Force successfully launched an ICBM carrying a training simulation warhead into the relevant high seas of the Pacific Ocean, and accurately landed in the predetermined sea area. This missile launch is a routine arrangement of the Rocket Force's annual military training. It effectively tests the performance of weapons and equipment and the level of troop training, and achieved the expected purpose. China notified relevant countries in advance.

I was discussing with @escobar last night about whether it is indeed an ICBM.

Now it turns out to be an ICBM test into the south Pacific, a resumption of full range demonstrative strike after 44 years.

The flight takes 11,800km, I would say it is DF-41 or something else.

The yellow circle is drop zone of warhead by DF-5 in 1980, now far exceeded by the DF-41.

I wonder if this could correspond with a DF-45 test as well, given it's not unreasonable for that system to be potentially be at the stage of an all up test.

But as a new in development system maybe doing a full test into the open ocean would be a bit daring for them.

Is the silo-based DF-45 and the 20-wheeler DF-51 the same missile? The former would have looser SWaP-C constraints, so it doesn't make sense to me to deploy the same missile in two different modes.
It doesn't necessarily make sense to develop a separate missile just for marginally greater performance/it's easy to build a large enough TEL for the silo based, so imo they likely are.

I would say it can be anything, because it is almost certain launched from Wenchang Launch Center.

It not only has something to demonstrate PLARF's capability after huge reshuffle on the leadership and but also related to the silo lid problem & allegedly rocket filled with water drama.

Anyway I think it is a good news that China should start conducting regular routine launch into the South Pacific, especially after Liaowang-1 enters service.
