Something from ShiLao podcast today. They mentioned that J-16 performed really well in the military exercise in Russia (Zapad 2021?). In the final part of the competition, it not only did better than su-34 but had the best ever score in ground attacks. Quite impressive when considering that Su-34 is more attack focused than J-16 and has more combat experience.

I really wonder what that amounts to considering the exercises with Russia virtually always only involve dumb bombs and unguided rockets.

I suppose if the metrics of the exercise include target acquisition with offboard datalinking, which would require the aircraft's avionics suite to do a bit of work including the aircraft's radar to perform SAR mapping, that might explain it.

I don't recall J-16s going to Russia carrying any targeting pods.

Are we allowed to use such terms as “dumb-bombs” in this forum? Isn’t that derogatory, ableist terminology? We must try to be more inclusive!

Fine, exceptional bombs.

It doesn't mean too much, but allegedly the Russians were surprised since Su-34 is still a dedicated air to ground platform. The fact that a multi-role like the J-16 not only outperformed it but also set the Aviadart record might be hard to accept.

Do we have any idea of the services’ comparative flight-training hours, or the comparative extent to which flight-simulator training is leveraged?

Their podcast believes China saw a huge change in training from in the recent years. PLAAF believes it has much more flight training hours and more realistic training than RuAF.

The Su-34 was a massive step forward for the Russian Air Force. Their previous fighter bombers did not have a glass cockpit or modern avionics. It also has a lot of integrated systems like sensors and radar jamming built in. But, because of the protracted development process it had, some of its technology was a bit obsolete on arrival. The original engine was also underpowered. That is why they are developing the Su-34M.

I would not be surprised if the J-16, which is a much more recent aircraft, outperforms the Su-34 in some aspects.
