Can't they do that with the J-31? Do they really need to come out with a J-11D?
I have this feeling, the J-11D was aimed at the Su-35 market... and they might even add in the WS-15 to this body.
The higher ups don't want dependency on Russia. J-11D will be a Su-35 with better RCS reduction measures. By the way the news seems legit since it was from the cjdby official blog.

Add a moving LERX, small all moving tails and I think it would look suspiciously like the PAK-FA.
If this is true, then it means a J31 like project is just too much for SAC to undertake alone with no official support, so they are following the Sukhoi roadmap in building 5th gens on the cheap by trying to make a flanker stealthy.
Would PLAAF even be interested in a stealthy flanker? 
Rumours say PLANAF chose J-20 for their new carrier 5th gen fighter, so J-31 lost a big potential customer. PLAAF could have had a role for J-31 as their own F-35, but maybe they're looking at the USAF procurement model and thinking it's not for them?
So will a J-11D (or C -- are they the same aircraft, or are SAC going to try and pump out another two flanker derivatives??) be used to supplement the J-20? I.e.: J-20 will be the PLAAF's A team for their heavy weight, long range air superiority fighter with J-11C/D as a plane with similar range but less stealth (thus avoiding the USAF debacle where they will soon lack a large number of heavy weight fighters once F-15s start retiring).

Does it mean anything that the moderators over at CJDB have highlighted the J-11D news thread in red?
Yeah I'd be wary of buying any fighters from Russia since I'm always reading that Russia wants to sell the very same ones to China's antagonist neighbors as well.
