Is a large and impressive cutter.

It will be very interesting to see how it is outfitted, particularly what electronics, sensors, and weapons fit it receives.

But it is one big momma, and it has a very decent size landing deck and hanger facilities.

There were rumours of it carrying a pair of 30mm autocannons and a 76mm gun. It would quite light armament for a cutter of this size -- for instance the legend class has a 57mm gun and a 20mm ciws, at less than half the displacement of this monster -- but then again, I think the point of this cutter isn't to put weapons on it, but rather to take advantage of its endurance/range. I'm sure it'll have good aviation, command/control (for coast guard level), and civil maritime relief capabilities too.

But holy cow it has a massive smoke stack. Like it's almost comically big. It's like someone took 056's smoke stack and decided to upsize it a half dozen times or more

Doesn't look like they are installing the 76mm gun, maybe not even the 30mm cannon for now. That would be in trend with recent CCG vessels.
As for sensors, I expect only simple navigation and surface search sets. Nothing fancy like the NSC, as they have different roles. Chinese decision to build these big cutters seems directly influenced by how useful the big Japanese Shikishima was during the Diaoyu Island standoff. The ability to continue patrol in stormy seas that would force smaller ships back to port. Shikishima was so useful, the Japanese commissioned another one in 2013, but without the air search SPS-49.

Well, a 76mm gun and two 30mm autocannons are not a slouch armament for a Coast Guard Cutter. I would be surprised if they did not have a CIWS as well, either a couple of 30mm AK-630s, or one of those and one of the eight cell FN-3000L missile launchers.

The smoke stack looks like it is probably handling all of the exhaust for what is probably four large gas turbines. So, instead of two, they are using one, which would make it larger of course.

And...you are right, this will be a long endurance cutter, and it will have significant air facilities.

It will be intereting to see the two of them finished and on trials.

Also from the previous pics we can see good progress on D5 with the bulb installed on the mast and painted

This is good set of pics and giving plenty of information

Also as joshuatree said its 9,000 ton class cutter strange how it's 3,000 ton short of what was previously expected

9000 tons could simply mean empty displacement.

I wouldn't put too much stock into its pennant number representing displacement.

Yes that did cross my mind and so did the fact that it could be like the 5,400 cutter Haixun 01 at say 9,400 tons but never the less the number is 2901 the "9" indicting the tonnage

I'm not sure if the whole "number representing tonnage" would apply in this case.

And if it did, it may mean 9000 tons empty.

I don't see why the numbering system can't apply. Are all the other ships numbering based on empty weight? If so, nothing different here except maybe everyone's expectation of 10,000+ tons but this could be another lost in translation episode. Maybe all along the over 10,000+ ton references to the ship loaded.

The smoke stack looks like it is probably handling all of the exhaust for what is probably four large gas turbines. So, instead of two, they are using one, which would make it larger of course.

So is the consensus this ship will be powered by gas turbines? It really would be putting the quad QC280 config suggested for the 055 into real world use.

I suppose the second number in their designations could reflect empty displacement, when I look over some of the other ships.
Certainly, empty displacement of 9000 tons for a ship of this size means a full displacement of about 12000 tons is viable which is what we've all been expecting

Personally I think it's doubtful regarding what kind of propulsion it's using. A large smoke stack simply means a lot of horsepower, it doesn't necessarily indicate as to the kind or number of engines it is using.
