Video from last week: US Naval Institute /w Jim Fannell seemingly confirming Aug 2020 PRC missile tests (DF26 + DF21D) "by all acounts" hit moving target at sea. I've
mused about this test before about how US confirmed then retracted hit on target, followed by PRC senior colonel Wang Xiangsui confirming success in November with no US followup. This seems like final confirmation by former director of intelligence for pacific fleet. Relevant timestamp @27:44, transcript juice:
then right outside ningbo in eastern china they shot a df-21d and a df-26 into that target closure area and by all accounts they hit a moving target. Now this was the first time that any one of these anti-carrier ballistic missiles had actually been seen to actually you know find a target at sea and hit it. And i think it was a signal from china to our navy to say we know you've been watching this. I watched the development of this missile system in 2006 to 2008 when i was the office of naval intelligence uh but there were always skeptics around saying well they've never hit a moving target and i think china very uh deftly sent us a signal saying we can hit you. And so this is a kind of a confirmation of the worst fears that many of us had and so that's why there's a lot of work inside the navy to figure out how do we deceive this missile system or be able to shoot it down.
Also validates my argument that PRC focus on land testing for opsec (away from western ELINT in open waters), which seemed to be a big talking point in recent Herzinger & Doyle's Carrier Killer book that speculated PRC forced to move missile testing back to desert because these missiles weren't ready. The propaganda/narrative around this test was interesting to follow and seems like some US analysts ate their own bait.
