if china demonstrates a strategic technology that US lacks US loses. This is the simple logic of arms race. And remember that china mil budget is 2% of gdp, USA mil budget is about 4% of gdp. So usa loses two times

5G, both base station and applications
----- Hypersonic, both military and civilian applications
------------ Quantum Technologies, both quantum communication and quantum computing

Several years ago it was a big deal. Today... not so much. That's because back then the US assumed it would be first to then brag they have it. Before the J-20, stealth was invincible. After the J-20 all of the sudden stealth could be easily defeated. They exaggerate when they're the only ones to have it and then the "truth" comes out when they aren't the only ones. What they don't talk about which tells a lot is now all of the US and its allies are in range where before the range issue comforted them. They talk about how Aegis can knock this down. Are they going to spend the money to make enough Aegis ships to encircle the US? How about this satellite system they say they can put up to track hypersonic missiles? How about allies? Lots of money they don't have that will have to be spent.
the grim part is that usa has not so many money. Soviet Union was always lagging in hi tech military (ecm, ir, radar electronics etc) because there was not a civilian hi tech industrial base. China is a very different beast-

SIPRI revised the past 20 years of Chinese military spending from 2% to 1.7% of GDP

US military spending over the past 20 years is more like 3.5%-ish
