Chengdu next gen combat aircraft (?J-36) thread

I am not a aircraft design expert by any stretch of the imagination, but putting essentially a VLS module in the middle of the ventral intake (which is supposed to be empty for airflow) sounds like a pretty bad idea…

edit: actually it’s in all 3 intakes, even better
Yeah, it's bad for performance but anything that makes it not a straight duct with exposed fanblades detracts from performance. So since they have to snake it around anyway to gain stealth by sacrificing some performance, I assume they'll have designed the housing bulges in places where they are either minimally intrusive to the contorting airflow or even better if they are integral components to stealth design so that slightly less contortion of the ducts needs to be used improving airflow.

For some reason this is what westerners WANT it to be. They are desperately wishing that this plane is an strike aircraft.
It's what China wants and needs as well. The regular 4th and 5th gen airforce won't struggle with taking out US Asia air forces.

The problem is all the pesky IADS that hostile countries have, stopping China from using its bomb/missile over capacity to turn any US aggression supporter states into a bigger version of Sodom and Gomorra.

We need the best SEAD aircraft ever designed to reliably pierce those air defense.

Coincidentally J-36 can not just do SEAD, it can also do other counter air attacks. But SEAD is defintely something that will be huge for it and should not be downplayed, it is one of the major missing pieces.

There's a reason China has a 2nd 6th gen to complement this platform.

I think it's beacause that way they can downplay it as ''just an small bomber'' and for the shenyang one ''just another drone''... It would be a nightmare for them if both are manned air superiority aircraft.

Bad for them i guess. :)

I don’t see how that improves things? It’s like having to choose between doing a blow job and taking it up the exhaust pipe.

A large aircraft like this being a bomber is still within the realm of their perception of air combat, whereas an aircraft of such dimension being an air superiority fighter represents a shift of paradigm that takes them out of their comfort zone. I attribute this to a lack of imagination.

to put it simply, if this were just a bomber, Americans can always say "well we already have B-2/21". If it were a fighter, then you are going to wonder what kind of new technology and ideas are being incorporated? how does this change air combat? lots of unknowns in there.

the simplest way to rebuke the idea of this being a bomber is that if PLAAF wanted a bomber they would have asked Xi'an.
