Slats are leading edge extensions. Lets not be misinformed just because the illustration is stupid about the plane's role.
Slats and LERX aren't the same thing although they have similar effects.

Slats when extended increase stall angle by a combination of pressure gradient smoothing at leading edge, and injection of high velocity flow into the boundary layer via the slot.

LERX also increases stall angle but by creating vorticies that inject energy into the boundary layer and delays flow separation.

Dog-Tooth act similarly to LERX just much weaker

Leading edge cuff is like a slat without the slot, it only smooth the pressure gradient

They're technically all leading edge devices and all increase stall angle, but LERX works on different principle than slats.

They all fall under Leading Edge Extensions, even if they work differently. So calling a slat a leading edge extension is not wrong. Its like taking issue with calling an apple a fruit because its not an orange.

This will be my last post on the Leading Edge nomenclature, lest the thread derail dm your replies if you want.

All LERXs are LEXs. But not all LEXs are LERXs.
