I'm curious, why they call it a 6th generation fighter, when China just finished developing J35, which is basically a 5th generation fighter. If they really have 6th generation tech that surpass the 5th generation tech, then the J35 should also be called as 6th gen? But if it used the 5th gen tech and improve it, then shouldn't we call it as a 5th gen, despite it is better than any Chinese current 5th gen aircraft?

To be called as 6th gen, it should capable to surpass the J-20 and J-35 technologically at least 1 generation away. Which is impossible for China, as the J-20 and J-35 also use their best technology right now. Well, unless the White Emperor is real or this plane can enter the near Earth orbit. That's 6th gen fighter.

The J-35 is an evolution/redesign of the export-oriented FC-31, which first flew in 2012. It's also about to enter service with the PLAAF (J-35A) and, presumably soon after, the PLANAF (J-35).

The J-36, as well as Shenyang's unnamed 6th gen, are just beginning to be flown as prototypes. They can be expected to complete their development/test and evaluation cycles in the early 2030s, with a conceivable IOC in a first-line squadron around 2032.

As such, it's no surprise that the two aircraft just flown are a generation ahead of the J-35.

Can we just stop with the generation crap? The whole generation narrative is just a marketing shtick to begin with, we should focus on actual capabilities and how they impact doctrine and such.

I guess one thing you can ask is if this thing can eat current gen for breakfasts.... Personally I think those giant optical windows are quite telling, that this thing is meant to kill stealth jets, among many other things.

Another thing I'm wondering is that this thing obviously has huge range, this brings up the question of how it is supposed to work with CCA drones or if it does. If drones are supposed to keep up with J-36 they themselves would need to be built pretty big to cover the range

China has a development doctrine of manufacturing a current generation while developing a next generation, and at the same time evaluating concept of the next-next generation.

Year 2024-2025
Current production => J35A 5th gen
Current development => J36 6th gen, serial production is expected at around or after 2030
Current Concept Evaluation => 7th gen, will be an event after 2045

Would IR signatures be a problem if this aircraft is designed for high speed flights? If so, what can be done to mitigate it?
