Chengdu next gen combat aircraft (?J-36) thread

Can we just stop with the generation crap? The whole generation narrative is just a marketing shtick to begin with, we should focus on actual capabilities and how they impact doctrine and such.

I guess one thing you can ask is if this thing can eat current gen for breakfasts.... Personally I think those giant optical windows are quite telling, that this thing is meant to kill stealth jets, among many other things.

Another thing I'm wondering is that this thing obviously has huge range, this brings up the question of how it is supposed to work with CCA drones or if it does. If drones are supposed to keep up with J-36 they themselves would need to be built pretty big to cover the range
To be fair I think generation does make sense here. I think the right way to segment generations is by air combat doctrine paradigms and these new planes represent such a paradigm shift.

Forget that for a second, I'm wondering if it is even possible to increase budgets meaningfully vs China?

PLA releasing 2 new, most likely 3 new B-21/JSF sized projects out of left field. It shows they have seemingly unlimited money. At the same time Beijing is expanding forces at the same high rates, J-20 program is still thriving, J-35 is ramping up etc. It seems increasingly clear that China actually isn't limited by any possible monetary cost, only by the time it takes to train soldiers/pilots/sailors and the time it takes to for engineers and researchers to do their thing.

And just today, they also okayed a random dam with pricetag $ 200 billion.

Beijing has some sort of near unlimited wealth generator that evidently exceeds whatever ability US has to print their own money. That phenomenon should be further studied (in the economics threads tho, not here)

I don't want to derail the thread more, but to this point, China offered US dollar denominated bonds in Saudi Arabia recently. That effectively means they can match the US ability to print dollars ex nihilio by trading for them using their industrial/commercial capacity. It's a truly staggering statement.

To be called as 6th gen, it should capable to surpass the J-20 and J-35 technologically at least 1 generation away. Which is impossible for China, as the J-20 and J-35 also use their best technology right now. Well, unless the White Emperor is real or this plane can enter the near Earth orbit. That's 6th gen fighter.
"J-20 and J-35 also use their best (+TRL 8/9) technology right now." J-10 was finalized in 2004 and J-20's first flight is in 2010. J-20 was finalized in 2017. By your line of argument J-20 cannot surpass J-10 1 generation away because by 2010 J-10 uses their best technology by then. The reality is that the finalized versions of aircraft never uses "the best technology right now".
If they really have 6th generation tech that surpass the 5th generation tech, then the J35 should also be called as 6th gen? But if it used the 5th gen tech and improve it, then shouldn't we call it as a 5th gen
You probably have some misconceptions about prototype and production model. A prototype aircraft does not have to use new generaion technology in every aspect. A lot of new technology will be developed alongside the prototype's test flights and then be incorporated into the system. Right now the most important mission for this prototype is perhaps about testing the tailless configuration, which is important for broadband stealth.

What unique high-end capabilities does a H-20 have?

The H-20 has got more range and payload because:

1. It's optimised as a subsonic flying wing for payload and range
2. The H-20 has 4 engines rather than 3 engines

But for everything else, there shouldn't be much difference between an H-20 and J-36. If anything, the J-36 will have more capabilities.

---

The prior rumours of the H-20 being postponed make a lot more sense now, because there are comparatively few worthwhile targets beyond Guam (3000km away) and the rest of the 2IC. The next worthwhile potential target is Hawaii on the 3IC which is 8000km away.
H-20 is a strategic platform, the role is quite different from fighter bombers.
Hovering around in a safe corridor waiting for time sensitive targets to appear, to give a lethal punch is crucial to win future war

tactical fighter bombers they are big compared to fighter jets, so carries more loads and fuel, but strategic bombers are at other level. It is way more efficient than tactical platforms at long distance.

no matter it is in 2IC or 3IC, what PLAN and PLAAF needs are accurate and destructive firepower delivery, is available day and night, and that delivery has to be quick and deadly.

Would IR signatures be a problem if this aircraft is designed for high speed flights? If so, what can be done to mitigate it?

Well, skin friction and shockwave heating is unavoidable. The only way to mitigate is either go slow or fast enough so your adversary don't have enough time to respond after detection. I'm guessing J-XD count on the latter
