We should stop looking at things from our perspective on what India is doing. India is acting according to india's interest. And India will support entry from countries it has good relationship with.

I haven't seen anything from India that would indicate to me they are acting outside of their interests.

It is amusing to me that everyone is piling on India but nothing against Brazil who is just as opposed to expansion.

At the end of the day, there will be some negotiations and some countries like Argentina and Iran will probably be on fast track membership. China won't get everyone added that it wants.

But that's a good thing. There is more credibility in an organization that doesn't abide 100% by china's interest.

Didnt Lula clarify on Brazil position and said otherwise? The original source was unnamed Brazil diplomat.

it's been rumored for a while that both India & Brazil are cautious about expansion and you can see why.

Anyone joining BRICS would be seen with motively partly to get closer to China, so BRICS expansion helps China. Russia is isolated by west, so expansion of BRICS also helps its power. South Africa has very little power, so expanding BRICS helps its position as a founding member.

On the other hand, both India & Brazil are powers in their own right, so expanding BRICS diminishes their influence within BRICS.

As such, they are likely to only favor countries that they are friendly with like Argentina for example. We will see, if I had my choice, I'd rank desirability as:

Indonesia
Saudi
Argentina
Iran
UAE
Nigeria

A lot of places with resources, population. We will see. One that represent global south would be one that China can grow its strength while giving it some cover

Interesting, why is Iran above UAE?

Interesting, why is Iran above UAE?
no particular reason. In my mind, you'd want the leader of the 2 Islam block in there before UAE.

But let's see how the negotiation goes.

in my mind, while BRI & NDB are good, membership to BRICS may give symbolic meanings to some countries & probably give these countries more reason to side with China on important matters.
