Replace (S)outh Africa with (S)audi Arabia...
Why? Putin is not attending due to concerns that countries they'd fly over could force the plane down or something crazy like that. South Africa have said for a long time they would guarantee diplomatic immunity for Putin and all the other invited leaders

Well I see this as a big loss of face and dignity for the so called BRICS group. When the second most important member's president can't attend the meeting because outsiders say nope it shows how weak the group really is.

Maybe I should just adjust my own misconceived view of brics to be something more of a after thought. You already have in group contradictions between Russia and India regarding a brics currency etc.

That's very generous toward Russia from you. We are going to have to wait a while to see what BRICS & NDB turn into. There are real issues with getting BRICS currency implemented even aside from India related issues

There's a lot of flight paths that are only over neutral countries...

I think a bigger concern is that Putin simply has his hands full with the war right now. NATO might be crazy enough to target him (and even if US isn't, Ukraine itself defintely is), and it only takes 1 lucky assassin. So Putin would have to go with huge security measures all around him, which is going to cause trouble. All that would end up making Russia look weak, and likely cause incidents/delays in meetings.

BRICS was always overrated, prestige-wise; far too many compromised countries. As a trade/economic/finance venture, it’s fine; as far as political influence, it won’t bear any fruit”

Indonesia's upcoming entry to BRICS+
Significantly, last Wednesday, ahead of the ASEAN summit, the foreign minister of Indonesia Retno Marsudi held a trilateral meeting with the Chinese Central Committee’s foreign policy chief and Politburo member Wang Yi and her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Jakarta.

The Chinese and Russian readouts (

Argentina has indicated its ongoing interest in joining the BRICS group, a coalition of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

This decision comes despite suggestions from the European Union (EU) for Argentina to refrain from joining BRICS due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Given its substantial trade relationships with member countries, Argentina’s interest in BRICS is primarily economic.

Argentina is closely tied to Brazil, its major trading partner in South America, and China, one of its key global trading partners.

I don't know what it is about the west that always seeks to tell everybody what they should or shouldn't do, it seriously betrays their colonial mindset. How is Argentina joining BRICS going to affect them in anyway? After all, they're still free to do business with Argentina if they still want to so what gives?

Putin will not attend BRICS summit in August.

Putin was be super pissed that India sabotaged the SCO summit and held it virtually. Putin's remaining chance to meet the international leaders is at G20 and/or China belt and road summit.

I'm guessing Putin won't attend G20, but will attend China's belt and road summit in Oct. Macron will likely be there, big things will happen.
