Aircraft Carriers III

in response to:
Good Lord ... "The carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower's crew proved Sunday that they can simultaneously deliver ISIS airstrikes and babies." it's not some stupid jokes, it's what NavyTimes had to say:
A U.S. sailor delivered a baby at sea — in the middle of the ISIS war

Wow...Pregnant sailors are not supposed to deploy. Wow...

I know someone whose grandaughter (age 21) had a very, very similar experience.
now:
"... by August 2016 ... The Navy reported that 3,840 of the 24,259 women sailors who were aboard Navy ships were pregnant."

Deployed US Navy Has a Pregnancy Problem, and it’s Getting Worse

Ok .....I searched and searched.. I could not find a single reputable news source with this story. I.E..>>CNN, NBC, Rueters, ABC, BBC or local yokel Tv station in the US.....If it were true this story would be headline news...anyone with a copy of almost any official USN letter can dummy up a letter like that with the modern technology available.

That being stated this problem has been ongoing for sometime..perhaps 20+ years. I doubt if it is on the scale quoted in this letter. I remember going to NAS North Island Security Department circa 2000 or so and all the women in the "vehicle decal" issue office were pregnant sailors from aboard the various carriers then at North Island. There were 14 women in that office. FOURTEEN.. anyone aboard ship knows that some of these women get pregnant just to get transferred off the ship before a deployment. That is a fact. And I'm sure that the USN knows this.

How to solve this problem? This old salt know what to do.....There are two solutions;

1) Segregate male and female for sea-going commands. Designate ships that are "crewed" by an all female crew. The USN is about 12.5% female...and of course have ships designated all male.

2) STOP putting female sailors aboard ships...PERIOD!

Just my opinion...'nuff said!...

Ok Jura I did find this..I did not check the numbers against the article you posted..

so I was about to tell you to call the number, talk to the Officer given in that document :) instead I skimmed through the document you now posted, which is a survey filled in voluntarily and "Results overall are similar to previous results." so let's wait and see

Jura, I've already stated my opinion. it's no big deal as long as operation readiness is not affected. Young women get pregnant.

The INS Viraat, the oldest serving warship in history will be retiring from service today, on March 6, 2017. Having served 29-30 years under the Indian Navy, the warship is to be towed back to Mumbai from Kochi to complete the decommissioning ceremony. It had arrived in Kochi in July 2016 for Essential Repairs and Dry Docking, something which had been completed on September 4, 2016. Before serving under the Indian Navy on May 12, 1987, the INS Viraat had earlier served with the UK”s Royal Navy for a good 27 years under the name HMS Hermes. While serving in the Indian Navy, the INS Viraat had a major role in Operation Jupiter, operation Parakram and operation Vijay among others. It must be noted that in the face of technological advancements and huge maintenance costs, the INS Viraat has to be decommissioned.

INS VIraat had originally been commissioned as the HMS Hermes by the British Royal Navy on November 18, 1959. It served as one of the Royal Navy’s 4 prime Strike Carriers, operating mostly in the Indian Ocean, between 1959-1970. Its contribution in the Falkland wars cannot be forgotten. The Indian Parliament on April 24, 1986, announced that it would acquire the HMS Hermes for £63 million.

of course option 2 is the preferred method, in my wildest I can't see an all female ship, sorry, but that is goofy IMHO.

IOC for carrier strike ‘will consist of one carrier, one squadron of Lightnings and Crowsnest’

The initial operating capability for carrier strike, which is scheduled for December 2020, will consist of one carrier, one squadron of Lightnings and Crowsnest airborne early warning and control helicopters.

Earl Howe, Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords said during a debate in the House of Lords:

“My Lords, the initial operating capability for carrier strike, which is scheduled for no later than December 2020, will consist of one carrier, one squadron of Lightnings and Crowsnest.”

Captain Jerry Kyd, commander of HMS Queen Elizabeth, commented last year on the initial deployment and the gradual increase in air wing numbers:

“We’re constrained by the F-35 buy-rate even though that was accelerated in SDSR in 2015, so initial operating capability numbers in 2020 are going to be very modest indeed.

We will flesh it out with helicopters, and a lot depends on how many USMC F-35s come on our first deployment in 2021.

But by 2023, we are committed to 24 UK jets onboard, and after that it’s too far away to say.”

Around 2023, the Ministry of Defence have indicated that the UK will have 42 F-35 aircraft with 24 being ‘front-line fighters’ and the remaining 18 will be used for training (at least 5 on the OCU), be in reserve or in maintenance.

Recently, the Ministry of Defence confirmed plans for the deployment of American F-35 aircraft alongside British jets aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth. The addition of US Marine Corps aircraft will see HMS Queen Elizabeth sail with 24 or so F-35Bs in addition to around 14 or so helicopters for her maiden deployment. It is understood that the US aircraft will augment British on the carriers first deployment.

The term now used for the carriers embarked squadrons is ‘Carrier Air Wing’ (CVW). The vessels are capable of deploying a variety of aircraft in large numbers, up to a maximum in the upper fifties in surge conditions although this is unlikely to happen short of a major conflict.

Captain Jerry Kyd also spoke about the vessels:

“The Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers are the product of a pioneering partnership between UK industry and the Ministry of Defence. As the Royal Navy’s flagships for the next 50 years, these ships will employ cutting edge technology to deliver fighting power at sea and over land.

Symbolising our nation in both steel and spirit, the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers will be powerful ambassadors for Britain on the global stage, in both peace time and times of conflict. These ships truly will be at the forefront of British military power projection for decades for generations to come.”

It recently emerged that HMS Queen Elizabeth will now sail for sea trials in Summer instead of Spring as previously expected.

Well Brat I maybe goofy but I'm sure someone up the chain of command has thought about crewing a ship with an all female crew and was thought of as being goofy..and of course that idea was shot down like a Japanese Zero over the Marianas in WWII.... A DDG or CG could possibly be crewed . Now a CVN could not be crewed with an all female crew. Why? Very few female nuclear power techs and probably zero Nuclear power engineering officers...and limited amount of pilots....and subs?.. out of the question..

The person that thought about sending women to sea with men on arduous sea-duty needs to be beat about the head and shoulders with a blunt instrument...just stupid..just plain stupid.

Just my opinion...
