UTTER. BOLLEAUX. In summary the authors spend a lot of time misinterpreting the facts of history, effectively saying "2+2=7, or 3, or whatever, but cannot possibly equal 4." And that's in between disproving their own conclusions. Just my opinion of course...

UTTER. BOLLEAUX. ...
LOL is it? actually I forgot about that article in the meantime, so it's time to read it ...

... I skimmed through it, contains baloney like "Additionally, due to their vertical takeoff and landing capability, the MV-22 could potentially lily pad off smaller ships, particularly the huge flight decks of Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) increasing their time aloft forward."

Oh I had a tirade ready for response but I backed off.. Anyway the USN officer that anonymously wrote the article must have read some revisionist history and that LT more than likely a surface warfare officer stuck in grade aboard an USN CVN...and he can't stand it...

That LT is jealous of NAVAIR....

Pure nonsense;

The history of the Second World War has been polluted by naval aviation, claiming the conflict as the age of the aircraft carrier. This stands almost no historical scrutiny. The campaign hung in the balance in the Solomons as much as Midway or Coral Sea, with no U.S. carriers available. Moreover, battleships proved highly useful throughout the war with their extensive anti-air armament and state-of-the-art radars providing close-in air defense for task forces. The Pacific War’s history is much more nuanced than naval aviation enthusiasts give credit for, and at its conclusion, not the carrier but the aircraft carrier task force proved to be the central weapon of war, with naval aviation posting meager results in ground support or strategic land strike.

Sey what?! hear that thunder from the burial places of warriors? that's Nimitz, Halsey, Cunningham & Yamamoto(oh yes I did) rollin' in their graves.

Australian landing helicopter dock reaches another aviation milestone

In a new aviation milestone, Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Canberra will be embarking two Army Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopters for the first time.

The two Tigers, will join two MRH-90 Taipan medium lift helicopters and one MH-60R Seahawk conducting first of class flight trials onboard the amphibious giant over the next six weeks.

The trials are designed to find the safe operating limits of the helicopters during a variety of weather conditions, according to Lieutenant Grant Thaler, who will oversee the trials.

Lieutenant Thaler is a flight test engineer from the Navy’s aircraft maintenance and flight trials unit, based at HMAS Albatross, in Nowra.

“I am looking forward to seeing just what we can achieve,” Lieutenant Thaler said.

“It is a very capable aircraft from a handling qualities perspective and its handling characteristics are favourable in quite extreme wind conditions; however, I am interested to see how it copes with pitch and roll on deck.

“It will also be exciting to see the MRH-90 Taipan, MH-60R Seahawk and the ARH Tiger all operating in an aviation battle group for the first time.”

The two helicopters are from 1st Aviation Regiment in Darwin, Northern Territory, and the Army School of Aviation in Oakey, Queensland.

Lieutenant Thaler said the primary role of the helicopter on land is as a reconnaissance aircraft.

When operating from a ship the helicopter would be used for forward scouting and as an escort for the MRH-90 Taipan helicopters.

The trials will be conducted over a six week period as Canberra operates off the east coast of Australia.

The ship will transit as far north as Townsville and then head south to Melbourne where the trials will conclude.

“Last year we conducted deck handling trials onboard sister ship HMAS Adelaide, and one of the first things we will do here is continue to validate the deck handling and ship interface elements from that first trial,” Lieutenant Thaler said.

not replaced by a specialised ship as she - only very small exist - and each year an Mistral is used for it, in the same time do also others missions, big ships cheaper civil standards but have a readiness superior to 80 % !

The former Jeanne d' Arc was always accompanied by a Frigate normal it is a combattant and students learn aboard.

With rustic English as like much members :)

UK Merlins 2 ! Puma, Gazelle, Tigre and Fennec in grey about 8 - 10 helos.

President Donald Trump will address service members aboard an aircraft carrier in Virginia on Thursday afternoon in an event highlighting his promises earlier this week to rebuild the military and strengthen national defense.

The event, scheduled for 2 p.m., will take place in the Newport News Shipyard on the Gerald R. Ford, a next-generation carrier scheduled to be delivered to the Navy later this year. White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Wednesday said the speech will be delivered to a crowd of shipbuilders and sailors involved in the carrier's planned operations.

The venue will serve as a backdrop for Trump’s repeated pledge to “rebuild” the military’s naval fleet, with a goal of 350 ships in coming years.

That will require major investment from Congress in upcoming defense budgets, along with a bipartisan agreement to do away with defense spending caps decried by both Democrats and Republicans.

But despite their unpopularity, lawmakers have been unable to reach a long-term agreement to do away with the caps, or settle on a stable funding plan for military spending.

During his address to Congress on Tuesday, Trump did not reference specifics of the naval build up or defense budget plans but did repeat his promise to fund a robust, revitalized military.

“To keep America safe, we must provide the men and women of the United States military with the tools they need to prevent war,” he said. “If they must, they have to fight and they only have to win.

“I am sending Congress a budget that rebuilds the military, eliminates the defense sequester and calls for one of the largest increases in national defense spending in American history.”

Lawmakers have disputed whether those statements are true or realistic.

On Monday, the White House announced plans to spend $54 billion more on the military in fiscal 2018 than the current caps allow, a plan that most Democrats decried as victimizing other domestic programs and some Republicans called too modest to meet military needs.

White House officials have said rebuilding military might will take years of funding increases, largely given the lengthy procurement process for military equipment.

Trump has also repeatedly promised to do a better job negotiating defense contracts, to save taxpayer money. That makes the new aircraft carrier a potentially potent — or problematic — choice for Thursday’s speech.

The $12.9 billion ship, built at Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc., has faced numerous delays and criticism over the course of its construction. Last summer, two of Ford's electricity-generating main turbines suffered mechanical problems, resulting in another delivery delay. The carrier was originally scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Along with the Navy build up, Trump has said he wants to add more than 60,000 soldiers to the Army’s active-duty ranks and 12,000 more Marines to serve in infantry and tank battalions. He also has plans to add at least another 100 combat aircraft for the Air Force.

Trump has not specified how that military build-up will be paid for, other than his public pledges to cut waste and fraud in federal programming.
