The original requirement by the UK was for 138 F-35s.yeah but it's uncertain if the UK will procure more 48 F-35s -- according to
Right now they have made a commitment to buy 48 F-35Bs. But it is also widely accepted that 48 is "not enough." Read the following article from June 23, 2014, this year:
BBC Article said:Former Royal Navy chief Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, believes the new aircraft is vital to maintaining Britain's status as a serious international player.
"By the end of the decade, we are going to have a credible air capability," he said, adding that the Ministry of Defence's original commitment to buying 48 jets "will certainly not be enough".
My guess?
As the article infers, I expect that the UK will accomplish their “Main Gate 4,” procurement contract milestone after the Security Review in 2015. That purchase will be for the U.K.'s first squadron to begin transitioning from testing toward operational deployment. That inital order will probably be for 14 F-35B aircraft.
Then, the UK's "Main Gate 5," decision will comin in 2017 and I expect that order will probably be for the balance of the initial 48 aircraft.
This would outfit either both carriers for peacetime operation, with a training contingent, or be able to outift one of the carriers with a war time load of 36 or so aircraft.
After that, I expect we will ultimately see a total UK inventoiry of something around 100 aircraft. Perhaps not as high as 138, but I believe 100 or a few more is likely.
We will just have to wait and see.
