The original requirement by the UK was for 138 F-35s.

Right now they have made a commitment to buy 48 F-35Bs. But it is also widely accepted that 48 is "not enough." Read the following article from June 23, 2014, this year:

BBC Article said:
Former Royal Navy chief Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, believes the new aircraft is vital to maintaining Britain's status as a serious international player.

"By the end of the decade, we are going to have a credible air capability," he said, adding that the Ministry of Defence's original commitment to buying 48 jets "will certainly not be enough".

My guess?

As the article infers, I expect that the UK will accomplish their “Main Gate 4,” procurement contract milestone after the Security Review in 2015. That purchase will be for the U.K.'s first squadron to begin transitioning from testing toward operational deployment. That inital order will probably be for 14 F-35B aircraft.

Then, the UK's "Main Gate 5," decision will comin in 2017 and I expect that order will probably be for the balance of the initial 48 aircraft.

This would outfit either both carriers for peacetime operation, with a training contingent, or be able to outift one of the carriers with a war time load of 36 or so aircraft.

After that, I expect we will ultimately see a total UK inventoiry of something around 100 aircraft. Perhaps not as high as 138, but I believe 100 or a few more is likely.

We will just have to wait and see.

-- that's what I found a moment ago using google, apologize if an order has been actually placed for more or something

the uk, for both the RN and RAF, is planning to purchase about 140x f35, but only the initial batch of 48x has been ordered for the carriers.

Possible 60 F-35A for complete in more less expensive and 48 B are sufficient because there will be only one CV on 2deployed and in more according SDSR 2010 RN don't keep the Pr of Wales, maybe SDSR 2015 change this ...

I see well UK fighter force in 2020's with about 200 units : 100 F-35 and about 100 Typhoon Tr 3 + Tr 2 upgraded, the 53 Tr 1 have an uncertain future.
Now 230 future number a little lower but best as 150...

2010 sdsr, reviewed during financial crisis, states that the decision for both qe class carriers will be made in 2015 sdsr. as uk economy has now become the fastest growing major advanced economy in the world and also due to many ongoing conflicts in eastern europe and middle east, i guess both carriers will be commissioned as planned.

The Queen Elizabeth class is a class of two aircraft carriers currently under construction for the British Royal Navy. The first, HMS Queen Elizabeth was named on 4 July 2014, with her commissioning planned for 2017, and an initial operational capability expected in 2020. The second, HMS Prince of Wales is scheduled for launch around 2017, followed by commissioning in 2020. A decision has not yet been made on whether to operate the second carrier.

USS Saratoga will be hanging around Newport for a while longer thanks to a family of peregrine falcons that have made a home of the decommissioned aircraft carrier.

The Navy has delayed the Saratoga's final voyage to Texas where it will be scrapped until the fledglings have their wings and can leave.

"We wanted to do the right things by these birds," Naval Station Newport spokeswoman Lisa Rama said.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service sent experts to look at the nest built by the falcons on the aircraft carrier under the elevator that raised and lowered fighter jets above and below deck.

The bird is a protected species under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and moving them could be a violation.

The nest was discovered in the spring and the fledglings are expected to be ready to move on by August.

There are about 10 nesting pairs in the state, according to the state Department of Environmental Management.

The Navy sold the ship to Texas recycle ESCO Marine r for one cent.

The decommissioned aircraft carrier will be dismantled and recycled using proceeds from the sale of scrap metal to offset the cost of operations, the Navy said in a release.

The USS Saratoga is an important ship with a storied history that includes a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam and Gulf wars and other events.

The ship will depart for Texas this summer, ending any dim hopes that she could be preserved or turned into a museum.

Navy officials said the ship was available for donation for public display or memorial but in 12 years, no viable applications came in.

“The Navy continues to own the ship during the dismantling process,” Naval Sea Systems Command officials said in a news release. “The contractor takes ownership of the scrap metal as it is produced and sells the scrap to offset its costs of operations.”

The USS Saratoga was commissioned in 1956. She was decommissioned in 1994 after more than 38 years of service.

Also known as "Super Sara," the vessel was also involved in an 1986 airstrike against Libya.

“[It is] emotional in that we who served on ‘Sara’ feel that our ‘surrogate mother’ is passing from our lives,” Sammy King, secretary of the USS Saratoga Association, told FoxNews.com in an email. “We owe her a lot. We went aboard as ‘snot-nosed kids’ and left as ‘men.’ Some of us are very sad and some are very angry at the decision to scrap her.”

popeye's note.. Saratoga was also know as "Big Sixty..from Dixie"..
