I have a question for the carrier aficionados in the UK.... When will the QE and PW have faulty capable airwings?..I'm talking F-35s...Any guesses or better yet any firm information and timelines? Thanks!

The officially stated position (as said by former UK SECDEF Phillip Hammond) is that the QEs will not leave UK waters on deployment with less than 12 F-35Bs embarked (i.e. one sqn), the rest of the air group being rotary wing (a sqn of Merlins HM2s for ASW, a flight of Merlin ASaC5s for AEW and an assortment of Lynx Wildcats, Chinooks and Merlin HC4s) as required for the deployment. Under current plans which only extend to the early 2020s, we will only be able to surge an extra sqn of 12 F-35Bs though there will be room for a third sqn if one of our allies should choose to join the cruise... I've long thought that when the RN talks of joint JSF operations aboard the QEs, they weren't actually thinking about the RAF but the USMC.

Thank you Master Obi Wan.. you have taught me well...

I've long thought that when the RN talks of joint JSF operations aboard the QEs, they weren't actually thinking about the RAF but the USMC.

As I've mentioned previously I'd like to see the USMC aircraft deployed aboard the QE.....We shall have to wait and see what happens.

USMC Harriers aboard Illustrious in 2007...We need to see more of this sort of exchange.

Depends on what you mean by "fully capable?"

Also depends on what they decide to do with the PoW.

As it is, the QE will first start receiving aircraft (F-35Bs) in 2017-2018 with the idea of having one squadron stood up and operational on her by 2020.

In 2015-2016 they will decide that the PoW will either:

1) Not be made operational and held in a state of readiness should she be needed, or,
2) Be inducted like her sister and become an operational aircraft carrier.

Should the POW be made operational, I expect she would have her 12 F-35Bs operating and in operation around 2022.

Should the UK put the POW in "storage" (which I believe would be extraordinarily foolish and only a plan an absolutely liberal mind-set seeking to "save" money for social programs...which normally are black holes that do little to really help people over the long run), then the second squadron of F-35Bs could be available for the QE and would probably train off of her so that by 2022 the QE could have two squadrons available to her, though as Obi Wan says, they will normally embark on a single squadron of 12 aircraft in peace time.

Let me get this correct.. you still have a Saratoga cap that is 29 years old? Wow!

Yes, true but I started very young to be interested in these things... :)

At this time the 6th Fleet had at least one CV permanently and often two.

That is very true. A one time because of an agreement with NATO the US was required to have two CVs in the MED at all times.

I made Mediterranean cruises aboard JFK in 1972 & '73. The other carriers in the MED in '72 was USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42).. In 1973 it was USS Independence (CVA 62).

I have been to Naples. But only on the NATO base when I was flying to catch up with the JFK.

The JFK did visit Naples twice while I was aboard. However no liberty was granted. In '72 we were there for about 12 hours to pick up Midshipmen. In '73 we went there for three days just to anchor with no liberty. We could not go on liberty because of a cholera outbreak in Naples.
