Aviation Boatswain's Mate launches a US Army AH-64E Apache Guardian from 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, during deck landing qualifications, a historical first for the E model of the Apache, on the flight deck of amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) while underway for Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2014.

Ever wonder how arresting gear is installed? Here ya' go...

1) Cut hole in flight deck.
2) Remove old arresting gear.
3) Install new arresting gear.
Have You noticed the removed plates stored behind the wholes in the deck - ready to reweld them when the replacement of the arresting gear is finished?

HMS Astute I would suggest adding in descriptions for your posts random pics don't mean much and actually mislead

The first is a picture of the RN configured Queen Elizabeth Class using STO and vertical landing the second picture is the old picture of Prince of Wales in CATOBAR configuration which has been scrapped in favour of STO and vertical landing

Both carriers will be using short take off and vertical landing no cats and traps now

12 to 15 F-35B ? max on the deck without disturbing the track and lifts.

And how many in the hangar ?

Re: QE Class Former and Current Design

Dated pics Astute, only the first half of the 1st one is accurate.

The UK will not be employing catapaults or trap wires on either of the QE carier, which is what all of the rest of those pics show.

Too bad, IMHO, using the F-35C and the cats and traps would allowed for more capability, and more ability to cross deck with the US.

But that is water under the bridge now...and the two carriers as they are, with the F-35Bs will be a significant assett for the ROyal NAvy for decades to come.
