QE class was designed as a Joint with the French. The Class was designed to be tailored to three types of Carrier. STOVL was selected as it placed the Emphasis on the fighter and requires less specialized tailoring. just a structural ramp. but options for STOBAR and CATBAR were included. Although the French at this point seem to have not elected to follow through on it it's likely that if a french government in the future were to begin a carrier project the end result would likely have a high degree of features from the QE. Particularly of interest is Brazil the existing Sao Paulo is nearing end of service. by the 2030 she has to be replaced the second is the De Gaulle who is also nearing retirement age.

i think it is a shame the french government decided to give up on their 2nd carrier project due to economic reasons. overall cost of the project would have been slightly cheaper if more carriers were ordered. their current CdG will be out of service from the beginning of 2015 until late 2018 due to overhaul and i don't think they will get the 2nd carrier anytime soon, considering all the budget cuts and other problems of their current government.

Why don't France keep the carrier-like 2 Mistral Class they are building for her own Navy instead of selling them to Putin's Russia? There are strong objections by the US and UK on the impending sales to the Russians for reasons we know i.e. Crimea & Eastern Ukraine.

Advil the French at this point have only given one of the two the Russians have on order.
second the French government would need to pony up the cash to pay not just for the ship and to operate it but to return it to Mistral class spec and pay the Russians the cancellation fee. Although based on the Mistral class hull the Russian ship is wearing alot of Russian systems and is tailored for Cold water Russian ports. These modifications to the Russian Mistal make her incompatible with French operations. Finally the French Navy already has a complement of Mistral class LHD in operation, really what they are lacking is a full second carrier not a assault ship. Although a nation could operate F35Bs or Harriers or even if they could get them rebuilt Yak38 or Yak41s the French don't use any of those they operate Rafales they need a Catbar carrier and thus far nothing is coming of one.

hence why I brought up the Brazilians. They bought the Foch now Sao Paulo Off the French. And they have been offered a hull type based on the Future French Carrier. If they open the line for the Brazilian Navy then the French might just reap the benefits and follow up with one or better two of there own.

Doubt Brazil will purchase a Carrier: (1) The country spent a considerable sum of money to host the FIFA World Cup. Any money spent on non-priority projects will invite the fury of the people/demonstrators. Money should be spent on their poor/unfortunate citizens, infrastructure projects etc. (2) For strategic defense purpose, does the Brazilian Military/Navy really require a carrier?

And Olympic Games in 2016, they have modernized Sao Paulo, i don't see a new CV before 2020 minimum.

brazil spends only around $31bn on defence, that's about half of what the uk or france spends. i am not very sure brazil can afford more aircraft carriers. they have chosen gripen due to cheaper costs and these aircraft can't deploy on carriers as well.

Brazil has spent a lot of time and money improving their carrier capability.

They replaced their old vintage carrier with the Sao Paulo, which was the very decent Clemenceau Class carrier, Foch, from the French. They have now done a refit to her to get her through the next few years.

They have upgraded their A-4s to a much more modern standard and purchased and refurbished S-2 aircraft to perform the AEW role and the CODS role.

They will most definitley replace the Sao Paulo as it approaches the end of its service life.

My guess is that they will work with a builder (most likely the French, but perhaps others, including India) to design and build a 40,000 ton or so CATOBAR carrier in Brazil. And they will very likely operate Sea Gripens off of that carrier, which are going to be very effective and credible 4.5 generation aircraft. The fact is, the Sea Gripen could (and perhaps will) come aboard with Brazil before the new carrier because they can operate off of the Sao Pualo while she is still in service.

This would be a natural for the Brazilians who are already investing in the air force version of the Gripen from Saab. Saab and Brazil are already in talks to make the Sea Gripen a reality for Brazil.

And it will be a smart move...and as these things go, an economical one. In fact, one of the main reasons many analysts feel that the Gripen was chosen (among others, like technology transfer, cost, local design work, etc.), was because of the opportunity to go with the Sea Gripen for the Brazilian Navy.

Navy Recognition (whose owner is an SD member) has a good article about this:
