Pretty stunning video (best watched in full screen / HD)

Now that's an aircraft carrier in action. Absolutely splendid! The French Navy knows how to operate that ship! I'm happy the French are an ally of the US.

.... after seeing that I have to post this.

Only who don't trust his own airborne capability puts such missiles on a carrier.
The Kuznetsov does not get the same " offensive " mission as the US and French CVN with her CAW, it is used as a mobile air defense base, the Su-33 is use only such as interceptor, the SS-N-19 are his offensive weapons in particular against US CV, in Soviet doctrine she is a heavy Cruiser as Kirov, with one important number helo ASW and appellation politically better for the Turkish straits...

When will the French replace all the Super Etendards with Rafale M's on the Charles De Gaulle ?
The last Flotilla which use the Super Etendard is the 17 F, transformed on Rafale in 2016.

Popeye, watch the launch of the Super Etendard from about 1:45 until 1:58.

What does that remind you of? In the way they attach it to the cat. Watch what hits the water after she clears the deck and is powering away.

I bet you have seen that particular type launch before. We don't do that anymore...but we did.

Another GREAT Charles de Gaulle video. A little long but well worth the watch if you are interested in modern naval carrier operations.

Yes, the French certainly know their stuff. They have been operating CATOBAR carriers for longer than anyone except the US Navy.

This is a sling and it is lost each time, Rafale is held by the front landing gear as US naval aircraft, i don' t know how long USN use that, i believe 80's ?

Yes the sling is lost. However one of the ships I served on retrieved the sling because it was attached to the shuttle with some nylon rope.

Yes the USN stopped using the sling in the 80s.

Yes, I do know what it is.

I was just asking Popeye, because I know he saw it in use on US Aircraft Carriers in his day and was wanting him to reminisce for us...which he has done.

As he says, on some US carriers, they figured out ways to recover them back in the day. US aircraft, and, as you say, the new French aircraft are designed to not need the sling.
