as trade increases every country wants to protect its interests, having carriers and LHDs are becoming the norm for many countrys

for years everyone was holding back for big Navy but now Navys are back in fashion

during the 18th and 19ths centurys whoever controlled the seas controlled the world, in 20th century whoever controlled the air controls the ground, but in 21st whoever controls the sea and the air controls the ground, hence the massive build-up for aircraft from flat-tops

All about the new Indian Aircraft Carriers

Since the Indian Navy has launched a new carrier and it is currently undergoing trials, and since they will launch another new carrier next year, and then a third a few years later, I though it might be a good idea to have a seperate thread about Indian aircraft carriers to alleviate some of the traffic on the Carriers II thread and allow for more detail and concentrated dialog about these new Indian Carriers.

So, if the Mods will allow it, here is the first post in this new thread:

The

The Virkamaditya is a complete overhaul and refit of the former Soviet/Russian Kiev Class carrier, Gorshkov. The Gorshkov was the last of the Kiev Class carriers and was a transitional design for the Kuznetsov Class of carriers the Soviets would build next, of which two were built, the

, and the Varyag. The Varyag was later purchased in an incomplete state by China and refit into the

, which was launched last year (2011) and is now continuing its trials.

The Indians bought the Gorshkov from Russia and agreed on a 1.6 billion dollar deal to refurbish the carrier into a STOBAR configuration and to name her the INS Vikramaditya. This price included an entire wing of Mig-29K aircraft for the carrier. Costs increased and the Russians and Indians ultimately agreed on a 2.3 billion dollar contract. Now the refit is complete, the Vikramaditya has been launched and is in trials. She is scheduled to be handed over to the Indians in December of 2012.

Here are the lates pics of her on her trials...it is rumored that she will Mig-29K landings and take-offs during this current trial, as early as the last week of June, 2012.

I would actually believe it's for more than just interest protection. A LHD and/or CV are also power projection tools and expeditionary capabilities. It allow its users to deploy a land unit and maybe a CAG almost anywere in the world and stay there for a while. In our current world where interventionism seems to be the trend (military expedition, humanitarian assistance, etc), its showing that it's currently the best tool for that kind of politics.

The Vikramaditya on sea trial.

What are they doing ?
Testing their water systems in every way imaginable.

Water pressure, effectiveness of equipment and that particular water line and the equipment attached to it. This is what sea trials are all about...and there is LOTS to test.

You know the Chinese carrier has been doing the same thing on all of these trials. So many systems to check out...and then repair any difficiencies found..

But, as I understand it, there is a high potential that the INS will have Mig-29K landings and take-offs from the Vikramaditya this week during this first trial.

The Mig-29Ks are ready, they have already been tested abord the Kuznetsov, and the INS is already training in their use. I believe it possible that that could happen, though doing so on a first sea trial is not usual...perhaps the INS is wanting to send a message. It would only be for qual'ing the aircraft on the deck and qual'ing the deck itself though, not for any large scale training purposes until after the hand-over in December.

I do believe the Virkamaditya will be operational with its airwing before the PLAN because the air wing is already built and being flown by the Indian pilots, and because the Indians already have decades experience operating aircraft off of carrier decks.

we shall see.
