News of Russia´s aircraft carrier program:

What i find odd is that AFAIK, Russia hasnt build anything bigger than a corvette (except submarines) since the end of the USSR, almost 20 years ago, except hulls already under contruction.

Do they really have the capability to build aircraft carriers? especially nuclear ones? and how will they protect them?

Russia is planning a CVN? Humm:confused: Well a couple of years ago they said that they were planning on building 6 CVs.. so far not one piece of steel has been cut. Not one. And now we find out they are planning a CVN..Yea right..

As for escorts...How many Sovs do they have?? 5 I count. They could manage to field one CSG right now. But no more. Just my opinion.

All the plans and blueprints in the world will not float a carrier.

I do not think they have the money to build and maintain another one...they are having a hard enough time trying to maintain and exercise the one they have,

We haven't seen you in a long time Jeff Head. Welcome back!!! :D

Is there any chance that Russia might go for a joint-carrier project? They could technically get India involved so that they could fund the carrier together and then lease a few to India, much like how they leased nuclear submarines.

After Russia's current deal with India involving aircraft carriers I doubt very much whether India would be interested in such a deal! They'd only go back to the Russians if their own carrier project failed.

India carriers

Only recently knew about it:

India´s vikrant aircraft carrier (40000t) is already under construction since early last year at cochim shipyard. In addiction, a 65000t carrier is on the drawing board. But I knew about the Vikramaditya aircraft carrier (44,570) that india will get fom russia, although from a higher priced than planned.

I guess china just doesnt give as much attention to aircraft carriers as india. By any measure it has several times the GDP of india. Not wanting to start a china vs india flame war, but china needs to speed its program if it still wants to be a viable naval power in asia.

Wont compare the two again, although i think that it is an embarrassment that india is seemingly ahead of china in this vital area. In addition to the capabilities, its a matter of prestige.

But wont compare india and china anymore in this forum.

Great news for the US Navy!

EMALS has been commissioned!

EMALS Readies for Launch with Super Hornet

NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. – The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) completed catapult commissioning testing for its system functional demonstration at NAVAIR Lakehurst, N.J., last week.

“The team has successfully completed no-load and dead-load launches in all areas of the required performance envelope,” said Capt. James Donnelly, Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment program manager. “The program’s test performance and data supports moving from SFD commissioning to full SFD testing.”

Among the test points accomplished, the team recently completed a 154-knot dead-load launch equivalent to the weight of an F/A-18E Super Hornet, the first platform to be launched by EMALS scheduled this fall.

Moving into SFD marks the opening of the test program window for the F/A-18E launch and future launches. The F/A-18E is currently being instrumented and test data is being analyzed in order to obtain flight clearances and launch approval for later this year.

“Full SFD demonstrates the significant progress the EMALS program is making in Lakehurst,” said Ms. Lisa Nyalko, program executive officer for tactical aircraft programs (Acting). “Completing commissioning testing brings us one step closer to our first aircraft launch this fall and more importantly, to our on-time delivery of EMALS to CVN 78.”

SFD testing began Sept. 12 and will continue to demonstrate system operation and hone software development/maturation simultaneous to hardware production on the first ship set.

“The production and delivery of EMALS and SFD are two distinct efforts,” said Cmdr. Russ McCormack, deputy program manager for future systems. “Hardware production is occurring independently from the system functional demonstration as component operation was previously proven in the High Cycle Testing and Highly Accelerated Life Testing phases of the program.”

The EMALS program will begin delivery of the first ship set to CVN 78 in 2011.

Regarding the news on india´s carrier program (see post 1058), do you think that USA will agree to sell catapults to india? (i cant see them developing it themselves)
