Well I thought the same when I was a kid, but you know as you grow up and travel around you are supposed to see and understand things.

Although to be fair the oil refinery example I have some unfair advantage, as my in laws use to work in a refinery for sinopec and I went with them to their old neighbourhood a few years ago and saw all that machinery.

interestingly, only steel mill and coal fired power has them. nuclear power plants in China doesn't

China's Olympic roster was announced, I don't know, quite a while ago. If people have issues, that's the time to complain!!! They can't be like if Zhu Yi win, Yeah! a hero. and if she didn't, she doesn't deserve to be on the team.

I agree. I think she dun deserve the negativity. I dun know when the skating roster was annouced, whether there was uproar. I dun follow figure skating at all. I did follow some gymnastics, volleyball and table tennis news during the lead up to the Tokyo games and there was unhappiness at the team announcements.

Which was further blown up when the athletes didn't do well as it reinforced the theory they have, that there was nepotism and internal politics involved so the less worthy athlete was selected. Maybe they think Zhu should have not accepted the spot. Maybe her falls and last place finishes confirm their theory of nepotism. Either way it blew up. And she unfortunately was a scapegoat like others before her.

I'm gonna stop here. I feel like I'm defending the bullies when I was, in fact arguing with them couple days ago. I just want to paint a more nuanced picture than what the western media is putting out there. Hopefully it's in the past now. And she can put it behind her.

One of the thing her grandma did was to make sure she could recite the 小九九 multiplication table by heart, it was tremendous help apparently.

I recall similarly when I first went to school here in Australia and showed how fast I could do multiplication in my head everyone was shocked, and I similarly showed them how it's done by reciting it. Then from time to time people would get me to do it just to see how fast I could go through the table.

I think this kind of thing is only possible in Chinese. You can't do it as smoothly in english for example because all chinese numbers from zero to nine are single syllable sounds where as in english they are not (eg: seven).

If you guys have kids over seas I highly recommend getting them to know 小九九 off by heart.

It depends on how the cooling is done. If there is a large enough volume of water you can just dump the heat into that. The problem is this will cause a huge thermal gradient in the water. In the West they typically don't allow this kind of cooling to be built anymore. The cooling towers are more efficient at removing heat from the reactor and don't affect or need as much water for cooling. The problem is building the cooling towers is really expensive and easily adds a couple of years to the project.

Endless posts about how "terrible" the venue is, using filtered dystopian photos of Shougang park, claims about fake snow being bad despite athletes saying otherwise, blaming the venue for Shiffrin crashing out

Endless news reports trying to create controversy over nothing (BBC claiming there's a "deluge of complaints from athletes", reports about covid spreading like wildfire despite it being well contained, reports claiming Chinese were attacking Zhu Yi despite majority being supportive)

So many westerners claiming cheating is chinese culture, that chinese have no morals blah blah. Just absolutely disgusting racist behavior from westerners. Anything to put China down just because they're butthurt. Meanwhile it's day 5 and team USA still has 0 golds.
