As someone whose parents live nearby, I'm pretty happy with the location. Shougang steel mill was the biggest local employer before its closure. People went along with the closure, but some compensation from the municipal government was due. Now the steel mill is receiving national and international attention and hopefully we can leverage this. The local economy needs it as the new Universal Studios Resorts will likely have a major negative impact on an amusement park nearby. Remember even in China a lot of politics is local.

Also the area is gorgeous. I used to make weekly visit to the public park leading up to the steel mill compound whenever I'm in China and the view during a sunny day has always been stunning.

That is why placing the a ski jump next to the old steel plant was a mistake. All snow related events should be located on the mountains. There are separate Olympics village up there on the mountains. It is an image that would lend itself to intentional bashing. Like they would use that image to reinforce their pre-conceived notion that China is polluting.

As the athletes jumped up in mid air and was showed in slow motion, those chimneys provided an ugly back drop. You would want to see beautiful skies and mountains as the back drop.
Says who skiiing facilities have to be built in mountains? If this ski jump was built in a mountain, it would be much further away from the city center, making it less accessible for its potential users after the Winter Games. The current location is already a tourists attraction. The ski jump fits into it just fine.

Aesthetics is very subjective. The cooling towers look awesome with kids flying high in front of them. It gives me the postindustrialism impression which depicts Beijing perfectly.

So Nathan Chen was born in the US and has US passport etc so he is definitely not a traitor in the legal sense. I probably should have qualified my remarks to emphasize that he is a metaphorical/figurative "race traitor"... in that he betrayed his ancestry to get Gold and glory for a geopolitical enemy that has vowed for the destruction of China on all levels...
People are trying to paint Nathan Chen as the poor son of middle class parents who gave up everything for him to skate, while Eileen Gu is the super privileged scion of ultra elite see see pee politicians who bought her way to success.

Actually, Nathan Chen's family is ridiculously rich.

Make no mistake, Nate is even more of an ultra elite capitalist benefactor than Eileen is and he's so rich he doesn't even need high profile sponsorships, that's how loaded he is.

Why do you always seem to put premium what those retards think over what the Chinese people's own OPINION WHERE IT MATTERS MOST. The Olympics were not made to please and placate us in the west; it’s been done to showcase China and encourage Chinese people participation into winter sports.

What WE THINK here that are living in western or stuck in Western countries are irrelevant period.

They're even on a smear campaign against Bing Dwen Dwen.

It's only the Chinese that like this mascot...

I saw some American athlete worried watching how other medal winners were getting those special Bing Dwen Dwen gifts at the podium and some were not. He was more excited to eventually get one than the medal when he won.
Chinese soft-power right there. Anglos are going ape-shit, I love it.
Aaaaaaand reddit is already claiming gao had a false start

Jesus. Too much propaganda has ruined westerners brains. China can't win anything without some sort of ccp conspiracy
I consider that a win. Roman Empire and British Empire died because their delusion was beyond compare. If they consistently underestimate China, that is only to their detriment and China's benefit. The more deluded they are, the more likely they will make mistakes. China doesn't need their respect, it just need to be respected enough that they won't invade us or start a war with us, China continue to grow grow grow until they have no choice but to learn mandarin.

It simply comes down to the American alt-right who are today dictating political discourse in the US hate any women who speaks their minds. The alt-right has an obsession against actress Brie Larson on the internet because she apparently speaks her mind. I see all sorts of YouTube channels with alt-right voices like they were given orders to troll her because they all say the same things like they were given talking points. Now they're going after Eileen Gu for the moment because she's a US model and she doesn't play the role of a geisha and speaks her mind. Also ironically because she's part white, they think she's their property and she voluntarily represented China...?

In the early days of Hollywood there was a movie called Broken Blossom. Basically the plot involved an insidious Chinese man who seduced a white woman from her white husband who then eventually killed himself from being distraught over it. When that happened in the movie, an audience stormed out of a theater in Los Angeles, marched down to Chinatown, and killed Chinese and burned down buildings. A similar mindset is going on with Eileen Gu. When a white woman goes out with a black man, white men see that and say what's wrong with me because they feel insecure with their masculinity. When a white woman goes out with an Asian man, white men say what's wrong with her because Asian men are not seen as masculine. Society says women are suppose to go for masculinity hence why one happens more than the other. The West is going after Eileen Gu because they're in bewilderment over her choice of country to represent. It must even make them even more angry because all they got was Nathan Chen someone who is an Asian male and in a sport that is seen the opposite of masculine.
I agree, American political discourse is all about "Identity politics" and "Culture wars" because that keeps the domestic public busy with trivial shit while the corrupt politicians and their corporate donors run out the back door with the spoils. Even worse with 24/7 news media, they have to generate content to get views, which means sensationalism is all but guaranteed. Taking a tiny grain of truth, then stretching it to fit the daily "Culture War" or "Identity politics" narrative is how American politicans can get away with doing little, but appearing to be "tough" and "decisive" with their constituents. American politics and media is a sick joke.
