If China is to lead in the gold medal count after the conclusion of the Olympics it needs to win at least 3 more gold medals imo, but more like 5 to be very confident.

I can't imagine that out of 11 gold medal finals the US is participating in that they lose the great majority of them. Their teams in most of these finals are more dominant than their opposition. To be safe, assume they win 8 gold of 11 finals.

US total gold count would then be 39 and China would need to win 4 gold to lead.

China has 1 boxing, at least 2 canoeing, 1 diving, 1 cycling, 1 wrestling, and 1 boxing where it stands a reasonable chance.

That's 7 gold opportunities. That includes about a half dozen outside shots, about as many as the US has or slightly less. I think China can win this.

It's fine to want more or to strive for a win. If they don't then we will still be happy for they really have done really well this year and more than enough but if they want China to win then they should be let to.

I remember years ago an American Judge{Federal?} was quoted saying something along the lines"every morning I would read the sports pages before than the world mainstream news because I'd rather read about human success than its failures".

China wins Gold in Women's Canoe Double 500m!!

New World Record, beat 2nd place by an entire 2 seconds!

Meanwhile US is losing (so far, but still early) to France in Men's Basketball. Pretty embarrassing if they lose again as they already did in the group stages.

It's looking good for China right now.
