Someday, Varyag will exercise with ex-Varyag
Now, that is a GREAT picture of the Russian Slava Class cruiser, Varyag.

But my first thought when you posted that was this...

Some day the Chinese Liaoning will exercise with her sister, the Russian Kuznetsov!

I bet we see it one day. Either the Russians will sail Kuznetsov over to the Western Pacific, or Liaoning will go around the world and they will conduct exercises together. It will be a really neat thing to see.

Liaoning needs to be capable to sink Kuznetsov in the event of another Sino-Russian split over Outer Manchuria, so I doubt there will be future cooperation between the two naval carrier groups.

Hey Jeff do you know if the Russians are planning to build and commission any more of those Slava Class missile cruisers in the near future?

Really?

Have you noticed what the topic of this thread is all about?

The Russians and the Chinese regularly hold large naval exercises together. If the animosity, mis-trust, and concern was as great as you imply, they would not have held the large joint exercises with some of their very best and most capable ships that this thread itself is all about, and which just ended THIS WEEK!

So, as I stated, given that the Chinese and Russians regularly exercise their naval vessels and task forces together, and use their best surface ships, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines, I believe we will see the two carriers exercise together one day too.

It is very easy to forcast such a thing. Both nations would benefit from showing such solidarity in the face of the growing carrier capabilities of other nations in the region.

I know of no plans to build any more Slava Cruisers.

It is a 1970s design. They planned 8, but only launched four between 1979 and 1990. Three are in service, and the 4th was launched but is moored in the Ukaraine. It was never completely outfitted or commissioned. Supposedly the Russians may be contracted by the Ukraine to help them (the Ukraine) finish that particulr vessel. But the Rissuans have three of them, and have no plans to build any more.

Right now, in addition to the very good, stealthy guided-missile frigates thay are already building, the next large vessel class that the Russians intend to build is a new, large, stealthy, and very capable guided-missile destroyer design. It is called Project 21956 at this point. It is planned to be 9-10,000 tons, be a multi-purpose vessel with heavy AAW and ASW capabilies as well as surface engagement (sea and land). It will be armed with a 130mm main gun, forty-eight VLS tubes for 48N6E2 LR AAW missiles or quad-packed MR 9M96 missiles, sixteen anti-shipping/land attack cruise missiles, ASW rockets, ASW torpedoes, two to four Kashtin CIWS, and a hanger fo two KA-28 helicopters,

They will be powerful vessels. They plan 12-16 of them and are supposed to start building the first late this year for launching in 2016. Here's a picture of a model:

It's a great looking ship, but I'm not sure how the Russians will be able to afford 12-16 Project 21956 DDGs, plus modernizing the rest of their navy. Their economy isn't well developed, and the energy revolution in the US will spillover to rest of the world, further dimming Russia's biggest money-making industry.

this is just a wacky thought, but wouldn't it make good sense if Russia and china work on their next generation aircraft carrier together? a carrier project is so incredibly expensive they can both save money and time than if they both go alone (which they are both surely capable of) sort of like britian and france doing their carrier project together. the Liaoning/kuznetsov like you said is a 70's era design and neither china or Russia should be building anymore and coincidently both of them have one. it seems natural their next gen carrier should be with a bigger displacement and more powerful they should like benchmark with what the USN is building. the hull and most systems can be standardized but leaving the most sensitive parts like battle management/electronic systems out so they can each build their own versions. even if they don't do the whole carrier project together then they can at least do joint R&D on two things, the catapult and nuclear propulsion. I don't know how close Russia and china's relations really are so whether this is a feasible thing or just crazy thought. but I think its entirely possible that china/Russia can someday be as close as britian/france.

What??? I don't think CV will be involved in any potential conflict between China and Russian. Even in the crazy times of the 60's and 70's, both sides maintained cool and used small arms. In later stages of the conflict, the soldiers from both sides actually had strict orders not to use firearms in any fights. So it would be almost impossible for them to use CVs in any potential future conflicts.

China wants to acquire the complete capability to develop its own aircraft carrier program. Just like the stealth fighter program, China wants to be independent.
