A model of 09IV SSBN on display. Not sure where this is from or the context.

– Length: 133m
– Beam: 12.5 to 13m
– Displacement (submerged): 11000 tons
– Speed (submerged): >26 knots
– Complement: 120

So I'm pretty sure that all official models are purposefully made inaccurate. They probably add in and remove a few key details just to throw people off knowing they will be photographed and send to three letter agencies.

My official AVIC models of several planes are all off a bit from the actual thing (except for jf-17). Think it's because the jf-17 is for export anyway and not a PLA model.

So for a sub that is highly secretive I'm sure they made more changes to model to throw people off. So no need to go into every detail and see what might be wrong, it's a feature not a bug.

The simpler explanation is that whatever low-level employee making the models doesn't know or care about exact technical details, and (correctly) assumes that the overwhelming majority of viewers don't either.

These sorts of mistakes are very common in public-facing media. Remember the twin-engine F-35 just recently? That one was egregious.

I used to think that too. But was told there apparently is a lot of scrutiny on the models being handed out and put on display, at least for the air force models from avic. I don't know people in the Navy so don't know if they follow the same practices.

When Chinese naval engineers were designing the 091, they didn't even know what a nuclear submarine is until someone got a hobbyist model of one from the US. Do you think they would make the same mistake of producing an accurate model themselves?

Can anyone point out just what is supposed to be the sub here? Surely not this blob circled in red?

then again, said blob is the only thing even remotely looking like anything that was visible in the images from june to november. june images actually showed the sub in the drydock section. and 6th of november was the last time this blob shadow/whatever was visible on sentinel hub.
