There are a lot of sources of noxious gases that could be generated if there's was a fire on board. But usually submariners have access to oxygen or gas masks that would allow a crew survive this sort of hazard. There should be a very obvious response from China though, like a notice to air or marine traffic and rescue/recovery vessels being dispatched with their accompanying transponders.

Xavier was right all along about PLAN ships not having fire extinguishers! I knew the ones we saw from @by78’s screw caps were just phony plastic ones used for propaganda purposes only. The gas masks are probably halloween masks modified to look like the real thing. PLAN saved approximately 5000 RMB and is now paying in blood.

You are supposed to do that even when dummies aren’t spreading rumors about you.

That does remind me of one thing. When a Ming Class submarine suffered an accident in 2003 during which all hands on board perished, both the PLAN commander and political commissar got sacked immediately. How are they still office when the Rocket Force top brass have been sacked for much, much smaller transgressions?

And secondly if there was some catastrophic hull event that was serious enough to actually kill 55 of it's crew, let's call it 50%.. most likely it would've killed everyone!

Not necessarily. In 1972 there was a fire on the notorious K-19 nuclear sub which killed 30 of the crew of 104.
