Yasen-M has 64 crew. There is like no way the crew of the Shang would be 55. Most similar US submarines have like >100 crew.
It all depends on if the submarine has automatic torpedo loaders and other automatic systems to reduce crew numbers.
But 55 crew is just not realistic. That is just about the crew of a Kilo class submarine of way smaller displacement.

Watch the rumor mongers claim next that not everyone from the submarine perished, only half the crew.

SubBrief being BASED for once......
It also shows just how bad this braindead misinformation is, even SubBrief is calling it fake

It is very baffling why Sutton picked this as the tree to hang himself on. If you go through his blog post on the supposed sinking he literally has to go through a dozen mental gymnastics loopholes in order for it to retain some semblance of credibility. Nuclear subs don’t normally generate noxious gas since it doesn’t burn fuel? No problems. This and this system could’ve failed and they needed backup power from the battery and then the battery could’ve failed because there weren’t enough fire extinguishers or something…

It isn’t like he is not knowledgeable about subs. It is just that he wants to believe so much that it comes off as sad… like a thirty-eight year old neck beard fapping to an 97 issue of playboy he inherited from his father down in the basement.

There are a lot of sources of noxious gases that could be generated if there's was a fire on board. But usually submariners have access to oxygen or gas masks that would allow a crew survive this sort of hazard. There should be a very obvious response from China though, like a notice to air or marine traffic and rescue/recovery vessels being dispatched with their accompanying transponders.

You are very right, baffling.
