Re: New LHD

Malaysia has also been interested in a LPD/LHD for a while now, wonder what has come of that

that makes 3 countrys for big ticket items, Turkey, Thailand and Malaysia, this could be good news for Chinese shipyards to bag a serious order

Indonesia picked South Korea for its 4 LPDs, which are relatively light LPDs at around ~8,000 tons

I can't believe that Thailand wants and LHD/LHA. They hardly use the miniature CV they have now.

Nice design by the way..

Maybe they want to retire their carry and replace it with a LHD/LHA instead? They pretty much use their carrier like a LHD anyways, a real modern LHD may well be cheaper to operate and would offer them all the capabilities their current carrier does and maybe some more.

Precisely... LDP or LHD are able to land heavy vehicle and troops much faster and proper than CV. Currently Thai Navy CV do not offer amphibious capabilities except assault with their AV-8. It just another very bad purchase on impluse by Thai based soley on pride and nothing else. Probably they can brag around, they have a CV and think their Navy is superior. But you need a huge support force and capabilities build around it which Thai do not have nor the financial to do it.

Really, with only $4.3 defence budget, Thailand can't afford to have or operate CV effectively, only for show force or a white elephant. It would be a sitting duck even for Vietnamese Navy :).

LHD is much more sense for Royal Thai Navy, easy to operate, effective and cheap, especially if it is from China

hsh saw these models at the defence exhibit and he put something together. It's not a secret than China has been trying to export submarines, lhd/lpd recently, so it shouldn't be surprising that they brought some kind of design over to showcase. It will be a while before we see what the real thing looks like if Thai Navy decides to put an order in.

I agree, Chinese defense contractors have a history of bring rather advanced designs to international customers before PLA adoption, such as PLZ45 for Kuwait and F25T for Thailand in the 90s. The pictures here were taken by Taiwan's Defense Technology Monthly magazine (a partner of HSH) at the March 5-8th Defense & Security 2012 expo in Bangkok.

Yes Kuwait has 3 artillary battalions of PLZ-45, they showcased it to the Saudis and Saudi also purchased 2 battalions of PLZ-45, total of 54 vehicles in addition to all the support systems, ammunition and logistics vehicles

they work well in the desert and have a pretty decent range on them

If Thailand were to buy an LHD, what would it do with its mini-CV? Could she be fitted with an angle deck and arrester gear and used for initial deck landing and take off training using something like a modified Super-Tucano?
