If Thailand were to buy an LHD, what would it do with its mini-CV? Could she be fitted with an angle deck and arrester gear and used for initial deck landing and take off training using something like a modified Super-Tucano?

i would call it a baby carrier, cus its so tiny, theres probably destroyers that weight more than it!:nana:

I think Thailand made a mistake when they ordered that ship, they should have gone for a conventional flatop LHD at the time for helos only, which are more practical for search and rescue

PLAN's version of LHD may be different from foreign sale version, if only to reflect difference in equipments and doctrines.
PLAN may prefer to emphasis helicopter operation, since 071 is more heavily weighted toward amphibious vs helicopter operation.

If I were PLAN, I would think seriously about supporting heavy lift helicopter that can lift at least 10 tons (there is a 33 ton class helicopter in planning stage). The reason is that they can lift *airborne* combat vehicles developed for PLA airborne divisions. So in effect this ship would operate *mechanized* air assault infantry vs a simple light infantry.

I agree with nemo, the PLAN LHD probably will have a rather larger hangar and elevators but much smaller well deck than 071.

so far China has 1 ton, 2 ton, Z9, Z15, and AC313, they are looking into a class between Z15 and AC313, around 10 ton helo and the heavy lift is 20 tons which is as far as China has projected its needs

I'd say it would have a larger hangar et al but similar well deck to 071, allows for easier commonality of equipment usage as well as design and construction.

So where will you put it? Superstructure is small due to the full deck. Large hanger deck is given. You will need a vehicle deck. You will definite need living quarter for the troops. So what do you propose to sacrifice for the large well deck? I suppose you can enlarge the ship, but would the extra capacity better used for even more helicopters vs the well deck?

I'd say that a larger vessel with the extra capacity for more helicopters would be the more likely production unit.

If all you want is a larger deck -- you can go with a trimaran configuration, with large superstructure on the front part of the ship, like US LCS-2. Instead of having a large well deck, hang LCAVs underneath the trimaran wing. This way, you will have a larger deck plus large LCAV operating capability.
