As to helo carrier, I think pla navy is awayting a genereation of indigeniously (co)developped helo with sufficient loadbearing capacity (Zhi-15?) both for assaulttransport and for asw-ash and aew work, before launching this vessel.
Anyway what are you with a ship if you either have second hand outdated- , or need to borrow its main modern weaponry?

AC313 that Z-8/Super Frelon update. is not that bad.
Most modern chopper's capability came from its gearbox-rotor-engine combo.

Interestingly, the ship's anchor is in the water even though the ship is tied up on the wharf.

Maybe just some work continuing in the anchor windless room. Or on the fo'scle.

The third type 071? It seems that PLAN is focused on obtaining blue ocean capability, but closer to home first.

Type 071 LPD with two Z8 and one Z9 helicopters on flight deck

"Type 071 LPD shown during deployment in Gulf of Aden. For the first time, it was carrying two Z8 and one Z9 helicopters on the flight deck. First time ever that we've seen Type 071 carry 3 helicopters. It was thought it could only manage 2 helicopters.

Personally, I think there's enough room for another helo on the far left. Z8 can carry 27 equipped soldiers and I think Z9 can carry 8. The total number of troops a single Type 071 can drop in 1 round is 2 x Z8 and 2 x Z9, which is 70 soldiers.

Eventually 3 LPDs will be built giving 12 helos and 3 LHDs (each can carry 16-18 helos). The total number of helicopters they can deploy will be more than 60! That is very good logistics at sea."

3 LHDs? A bit early for that kind of certainty I think.

I would think there can be no certainty, but to me its seems a reasonable guess. But the building of those LHD may start tomorrow or in in a few years time. There is more uncertainty.

dude, this is not some kind of penis contest to see who can carry more helicopters. In emergency circumstances, they can even squeeze 8 to 10 helicopters on the helipad while still leaving one takeoff/landing position open. Notice how there are still plenty of space around those helicopters. Of course, you don't want to do that in normal operations. And more importantly, it's about how many helicopters you can fit in the hangars. We've had postings on this already. The should be able to squeeze four in there. Although in normal circumstance, I would think 3 Z-8/Z-9 is the maximum they'd carry.

But really, wouldn't this push actual photographical and empirical stats as to the capacity of these vessels? If anything, it would be a step in the right direction. The Aden deployment surely pushes the envelope for the PLAN.

Looking at the markings on the deck, it is clear that the size of the deck is intended for 2 helos to land/take-off simultaneously. Any more than that and the risk from the down wash of 1 helo affecting the stability of another nearby will be quite significant.

While the deck can take more parked helos (as shown), it will mean that only 1 can take off safely at any 1 time. In this particular case, it looks like the rear most helo have enough space to take-off, but not the 2 further forward.
