Janes claim that China plan to build 5 more 071 class amphibious ship, and 081 VTOL amphibious assault ship is currently under construction.

Y'know, if the news is in simplified chinese and quoted from a foreign source, it's very likely fake article, unless we can dig up the original news article to verify.

The only thing that's certain, though, is that there're indeed evidence that the 2nd ship of the 071 class is being put together at this time.

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

article on the Chinese LCAC , talking about it practicing departing the well deck. It has two engines (not a surprise).
This is the first exercise by LCAC in the deep sea. When it's departing the well deck, there is only 15 cm between the inside of the well deck and the sides of the LCAC at the narrowest part.

a bunch of pictures of 071 and the Type 726 LCAC. There is a good one showing what appears to be 2 Z-8s with their rotors folded on the helipad of 998. We also see Type 726 coming into the well deck with two patrol boats already in there.

a couple of more pictures of the follow on to 998 that is currently under construction in HD shipyard. It's slowly taking shape now. Maybe we will see it launched by the end of the year.

I thank you kindly for these uploads as i always get very excited to see photos of the progress of newcons. However,to my untrained eye,i am struggling to make sense of them. In the first pic ,what exactly are we seeing as far as the part of the ship.I guess we should be focussing on the modular blocks on the right in the 2nd photo but again can you identify what parts of the ship they represent? Finally,do you know anything about the ship near the centre of pic 2 ? thanksalot.

The more I look at the photos of the LCAC, the less capability I guesstimate it has. At this point I think it can only hold 2 IFV's or 3 jeeps, and by weight not even a single Type 96.

Hmm, generally speaking you go by past experience and an ealier photo of this resembles that of 998 when it was at this stage of dvelopment. it's slightly less obvious with these pics, but it's vlear they are of the same ship as the first set of photos, so that's how we figure things out. I'm guessing end of year, because that's when they launched 996 and I think they can get it out by then.

By my estimates the forward ramp should be about 3.7m wide. Enough for a MBT.
