That pic showed up a long while ago with some members claiming it is PSed because the deck was too clean...

I remember that.. I still think that well deck is way to dry. But...We know now the ship is operational and preparing to deploy.

There are some nice pictures of 3320.

3320 looks like the only unit they have right now in service. It says that this hovercraft was put in water only on December of last year (I think it joined service in May or June). Kind of surprising since we saw what looked to be completed photos of it by January of 2008. That means they must have made some serious modifications or maybe were waiting for some engines. Anyhow, it says that it displaces over 100 ton (not sure in what configuration). It says that it's navy's first ship that uses large quantity of aerospace equipment. With 90% of its equipment from aerospace field.

The one thing I wonder is that big box/compartment thing in the middle of the hovercraft. The USMC LCAC does not have it and I really wonder why it is even there or if it could be removed on a different mission, because it seems a waste of space to have it there.

tphuang, I think that is something they are transporting because there is an exit ramp in front of what ever it is.

Does the article say how many LCACs will be built and when they will be operational?

it didn't say anything about that. The current one just became operational and is the only one on the flotilla to Aden

It's worthy to note that they actually bring the full kit - 071 class LPD, China LCAC, Z-8 helicopter - for this round of Somalia mission. It's pretty obvious the LCAC has little to none to do with counter-pirates operations, but for some true real-world test for this thing. 2 years has passed since it was first spotted in its incomplete form, then photos of its sea trial, and then a 2-second cameo on the CCTV newsreel... thus it'd be interesting to see, since the official source is no longer shy about it, it's probably cleared for serial production, or maybe the PLA Navy's ploy to squeeze more funds?

100 ton metric...wonder whether they're talking about with load or without load? Given it doesn't seems to have as large a deck space as the US LCAC, I kinda lean to the former...it just seems to be wide enough for a Type 99 MBT, while the US LCAC can park 3 HMMWVs side by side and the ramp is big enough for them to be unload at the same time.

As for that container, I'm certain it's just there for the test equipment and stuff. Still, without chance to do a full-load or even overload tests, little useful data can get out of this long trip.

That must be loaded displacement. The LCAC has an empty weight of 88 tons and this hovercraft is clearly smaller. So perhaps 50 tons empty and 50 ton payload. This may be barely enough to carry a single Type 96.

Im still not convinced that they arr deploying the LCAC to somalia. What would be the point? Unless they are also taking some type99s inthe hold and plan on conducting some joint excerise with pakistan on the way back, taking the LCAC will only be a waste of space. It would be far more useful to bring more small FACs.

I agree, the LCAC would serve no purpose with the anti-piracy patrol. But it would be a good time to trial test the LCAC, maybe 2 missions in one for this 071 deployment. How can the LCAC be tested? That I'm not sure, perhaps simply use it to haul replenishments from shore to ship?

another reason could be that the LCAC was restricted to the design dimensions of the well deck width area, it could be that originally the 071 LPD wasn't designed with the LCAC in mind where smaller boats or older sytle landing boats would fit in the well deck area ... the LCAC seems more of a tech and concept tester, it is too small to be of much use to carry heavy tanks and overkill for the lighter role of troop and cargo transport (from a cost point of view) to a beach head... the next generation LCAC would need a redesigned LPD or LHD with a wider well deck to have space to upscale in size to something like the US LCAC
