re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

By the sounds of things, the new LCAC is being sent as well... WHY? An LCAC wouldn't be useful in boarding operations or intercepting skiffs right?
Or is it just being sent for trials?
...Or am I completely off base and it's not going to aden at all??

It would serve as a good command platform, and it can carry lots of choppers and smaller boats that perform the actual boardings..

Something interesting to note is that there are naval special forces as well as marines deployed, and they can be distinguish by their different uniforms, with the SF is all back/dark navy while the marines are in urban camo.

The naval officer said the whole force consists of around 1,000 men so they are no deploying the 071 with anything like its full combat complement (which would be costly but may serve to test the ship better as well as provide training to the marines).

The only reasons I can think of to deploy regular marines would be to give them training and experience and also to get feedback from them on how they feel the 071 is as they will ultimately be the ones operating off it in the ship's normal role and capacity.

Could someone tell me which part of China does the official come from? I mean the first one who spoke with a strange accent.

Thanks

I think the naval officer speaking had a Shandong accent.

Where did you get that? There was no mention or image of the new LCAC in the report.

I said LCAC, not 071. A LCAC probably won't be able to carry lots of choppers and smaller boats... :p

Thats from a separate report. The deployment news clip had nothing on the LCAC.

1:32-1:36 ish

Though to be fair even this clip doesn't "say" that the new LCAC is being sent, I just inferred it from the video and tphuang's blog

Well, they are bringing 2 Z-8s plus 2 Z-9s to Gulf of Aden. Assuming one Z-9 is being carried by 170, that means there are three helicopters on the 071, which must mean 071's hangar is large enough to hold more than two Z-8s. Also considering the fact that the tail of Z-8 can be folded, I think 4 Z-8s is pretty realistic.

Not necessarily. The extra helo can be tied down and wrapped under tarp until it's time to use it. It's not like they're deploying to arctic conditions or something.

Stumbled across this series of pics on the 071. The last pic shows the well dock of the LPD with several small LCACs in it:

That pic showed up a long while ago with some members claiming it is PSed because the deck was too clean...
