Re: Type 071 LPD

From the following pic (and many others) it seems that it is very similar to the Russian design (ie. hinged above the water line and the gate appears to hing down). From this I would expect that it does not flood per sey like the US San Antonio, Tarawa, or Wasp classes. This will limit their capability to the LCAC type or their smaller hover craft, probably excluding convetnional landing craft unless I am missing something.

I am pretty sure Tarawa and Wasp classes have ballast tanks to lower the stern while loading and unloading landing crafts, so there is no reason to believe why 071 wouldn't do the same.

I'll have to take a look...but I do not recall ever seeing a Tarawa or a Wasp with the bottom of the opening above the waterline...but I could be wrong on this. Here's a couple of pics:

One should keep in mind that 071 in all these pictures is more or less empty with god knows what sort of internal equipment still to be fitted. Even the underside (red painted area) can be seen protruding above the waterline, which will surely be under the waterline when ship is on a real mission.

Yup. I'm dying to see how they use it. One thing I have noticed is that the PLAN doesn't have a landing craft comparable to a LCU. They have landing craft of that size of course, but they all have a superstructure aft and a mast. I don't think any of these could fit into the low confines of that LPD's well deck if it indeed is floodable. Have a look at a typical LCU:

This is a great photo because it shows an LCU in a flooded well deck. Not much room is there!

Now look at a PLAN landing craft of similar size:

Another reason I suspect this new LPD does not have a floodable well deck, the PLAN doesn't have a big landing craft that will fit, at least not yet. Something to ponder.

Great pic snake65! In light of that pic, it is now much more likely to me that the Type 071 will operate in the same way.

Interesting! Learned something today. I knew hovercraft could scoot in over the ramp, I didn't think the ship could flood the well deck. Thanks.

The Chinese have a couple of LCU type craft that may well fit into the LPD (Type 071). The older Type 68 which they have about 300 of:

...and the newer Type 074A vessel that looks very similar to the US LCU 1600 of which the PLAN now has 7 or more.:

At 800t, the Type 074A may be too large for the Type 071...I would have to spec it out better. But I believe the Type 068s could fit.
