I am definitely not saying it's impossible. It is IMO one piece of evidence suggesting a heavier tonnage than previously thought. But just one piece, with some reliability issues regarding degrees of separation, which I have already talked about. The LPD seems to be an adequate design for the role of amphibious assault, so yes, I do not believe there will any new LPD designs coming out anytime soon.Look, are you saying that the 28000t displacement is impossible? Because as long as it's possible, even if improbable, the rest of us will believe what PLAN sailors say.
It's useless for any of us to keep arguing, because the key difference between us is how much weight we give to PLAN officers' words. We give it a lot of weight, you don't, it's simple as that. No amount of arguing will change that fact, and judging on past history, it's unlikely that the PLA/N will ever release information official enough to convince one side to switch beliefs. Therefore, there is no point in continuing this discussion and let's just agree to disagree.
Back to the previous topic of discussion, can we at least agree now that the 071 is close enough in size to the San Antonio class that the PLAN likely won't consider building a new, larger class of LPD's any time soon?
Stopping at 3 units surprises me a little. I would have thought 6 would have been more appropriate, backed by 3 LHD's. That would have allowed a maximum availability of about 4 LPD's and 2 LHD's at any given time, enough for a complete marine division to be transported along with a sizable helicopter assault force. It looks like 071 production has stopped at 3 units and the next class of large amphibious assault ship will be the LHD. Of course quite a few of us would've been surprised that 071 only stopped at 3, but if it really does displace 27-28k (mysterre's objections noted), the decision seems somewhat more logical.
Some close-up photos of 071. Hope hasn't already been posted before:
It's interesting to note that they even segregate the messing hall for female sailors. Some of them are officers, so no Wardroom for officers?
Maybe its an officer mess hall because the other one I posted (the one with the orange chairs) don't look so posh.
Or maybe girls just have nicer stuffs...unfair!
I agree that does look like the officer's mess hall, this is clearly class warfare!
Well, it's even more so on a western navy's ship if you ever get to tour one inside. Real china is used for meal services in the officers Ward Room with its own small kitchen, vs. metal trays and cafeteria style in the mess hall.
these pictures also show the qaulity of the work on this LPD, and it seems very good, apart from those overhead cables which are not covered!
in my opinion the standard looks high
