Still don't see why we never saw a 4th Type 071 follow on from he 3rd

By now the 4th should have been launched a 5th under construction and modules for the 6th sitting at portside which means by next year all 6 could have been sailing, and so the suspense continues with no LHD in sight

3 is good but it is certainly not enough

the 2 Marine brigades might not be used for amphibious assault, but having the ability to do so would be greatly beneficial

I think China should be able to lift at least at the minimum a single 6,000 man Marine brigades using a combination of LPDs and LHDs

if we have a 20,000 ton sized LHD it will carry somewhere close to 800-1,000 troops, so same as Type 071, so it means China needs at minimum 7 LPDs and LHDs, but 10 to have 7 operational at any one time, so I would call it 6 x Type 071 LPDs and 3 x LHDs which could quite easily lift a 6,000 strong landing force, now that is something reasonable for PLAN, still not a massive capability but enough for a country the size of China surrounded by islands, disputes and interests further away

Maybe the PLAN is considering a bigger LPD? Something closer to our San Antonio LPD?

These ships are already almost the size of the San Antonio so it's doubtful. There is a speculated Type 081 LHD that will probably be bigger than the San Antonio, however, though they are unlikely to achieve the size of the Wasp class.

According to someone on CDF, a sailor was introducing the 999 recently and according to him, the 998 was already bigger than the San Antonio LPD at 27000t full displacement and that the 999 is 1000t heavier at 28000t.

Shall we do a dimension comparison between this 2 ships to get some comfirmation? But I agree 071 is near San Antonio LPD spec.

LHD will be the way to go for PLAN.
